I still felt sleepy when I woke up in the morning. That’s because I showed my English diary to Heather and let her edit it for me. Heather told me she is a published writer. She wrote some stories and won some prizes. It is great that somebody is going to check my writing. I am good at listening but not at writing. Yesterday there was a show on TV. It looked like participants should answer quickly after the host read the questions. Heather was good, she could answer almost every question. One question was; “What color is the river that is the second long river to Yang Zi river in China?”. I quickly answered “yellow” and was right. Everyone applauded me. I am good at listening.
I thought keeping a diary in English might be a good method to improve my writing skills. I also wanted to improve my pronunciation. I don’t mind if I gain an Australian accent, to me, it is better to speak like an Australian than a Taiwanese.
We did the same training today as we did yesterday. I saw some tracks and nests on the beach. There were also some crabs, the shells of abalone and oysters, the body of lobsters and and the skeleton of some urchins. The lobsters were huge! This time I easily recognized the signs of turtle nests. There should be an escarpment behind a secondary body pit. And there should be a mound in the middle of the escarpment. There should also be some grass and roots dug out by the turtle.
I cooked brussel sprouts with tuna for lunch yesterday. I should have washed it before I put it in the microwave. Some of the brussel sprouts were tender and delicious while others were a bit hard. I thought I would cook some more tomorrow.
We also went to see the sunset at the Jurabi turtle center and the lighthouse. At the Jurabi center, I saw an interesting sign which had a picture showing how turtles have sex. They actually do the some position as other creatures on land. The male mounts from behind the female just like Heather had told me in the morning. Heather also said that the turtles were having an orgy close to the chore. I asked her what does the word “orgy” mean. She told me it is a party involving sex. What a good word!
We had a great time when we saw the sunset from the lighthouse. We ate pizza and drank some beer. I took a lot of photos of the sun kissing the horizon slowly. Although I had already taken a lot of pictures, I still want to capture every beautiful moment.
At night time, Tristan took us to see turtles. The moon came up very late and I could see the stars very clearly. I won’t forget the fantastic view my whole life. Usually in Taiwan, the city is too bright to see the stars. The only way too see so many stars in the sky is to climb up to the mountain or go to the national science museum and see the equipment project the light on the oval roof. The view I saw last night was unbelievable. There were hundreds of thousands of stars shining and glittering in the sky. Each of them seems like they want me to pay more attention to them. It looked like eyes winking in the sky or thousands of diamonds and pearls spread on a black backdrop. I almost cried out when I saw this unforgettable scene.
I also saw a satellite moving slowly though the stars. No wonder people get confused between satellites and UFOs. Best of all I saw shooting stars for the first time in my life. The first one was pretty bright and seemed very close. It’s tail was bright red. Everybody was impressed and gasped.
The main thing we wanted to see on the beach was not the stars but turtles. Turtles crawl up to the beach at night and lay their eggs in a chamber. They are quite large. They range in size from 80 to 120 cm. There are three main kinds of turtles in the Ningaloo marine park. They are; the green turtle, the hawksbill turtle and the loggerhead turtle. Green turtles are seen more frequently than the others.
In total I saw four turtles. This is the first time I have ever seen a real turtle. I lay behind the turtle whist it tried to dig an egg chamber. I was so close I could have touched the lovely creature if I had reached out my hand. But that would disturb her and waste her effort. People should respect other creatures.
Whilst I sat on the beach enjoying the stars and feeling my face being stroked gently by the wind, I started humming a Chinese song called 夏夜晚風. The singer of this song is 伍佰. I love this song and it perfectly represented my feelings that night.
