Tenure Trap

在北美學界行之有年的終身教職制度 (tenure-track) 聽起來一板一眼, 像是一條軌道, 從上車開始六年後就通向康莊大道 (終身職的榮譽), 但是其中自有詭譎變化, 不小心停錯站, 換錯軌, 甚至出軌也是常有的事. 所以說這 tenure-track 跟軌道 (track) 沒什麼關連, 著作等身不一定就能吃到這金飯碗, 啥都不會, 也不一定就會不能飛黃騰達 (如果有特殊性 / 姓 / 悻關係). 這條不歸路, 應該改稱之為 tenure trap, 老恐龍設計來捕年輕小鼠或初生之犢吃的啊, 吃了不吐骨頭喔. 這漫畫很傳神.

當大家弄明白這事情以後, 所有的研究教職手冊都會用聖經傳道書這一節做開頭:

日光之下，快跑的未必能贏; 力戰的未必得勝; 智慧的未必得糧食; 明哲的未必得資財; 靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。

The race is not to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
Nor bread to the wise,
Nor riches to men of understanding,
Nor favor to men of skill;
But time and chance happen to them all.

您好,上網查"tenure-track",查到您的網頁.感謝.非常棒的blog.----然後就在我抓破頭之際,突然想到不知可否跟您求救? 我現正義務幫某基金會翻譯,其中有一小段關於大學教職專詞,大約三四行.但由於在下並無相關知識,所以有些鼻青臉腫.生怕譯成歪嘴邪眼,不知可否跟您求援呢?

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate programs in both sponsoring Departments, as well as to the Ph.D. degree offered through the Group in Buddhist Studies. The successful candidate will, upon appointment or promotion to Full Professor, be eligible to hold the newly endowed Chair in Tibetan Buddhism.
符合資格的申請者經錄用後，將教授兩系所的大學部與研究所課程，以及佛學研究的博士班課程。被錄取者可能以正教授聘任，或來日將被升為正教授，如此而具有擔任最近捐贈佛學教席資格。

我是覺得最後一句還是有些怪怪的~~

看起來翻譯得四平八穩. 最後一句也許可以翻譯成這樣. 因為意思複雜所以分成兩句話來說.

The successful candidate will, upon appointment or promotion to Full Professor, be eligible to hold the newly endowed Chair in Tibetan Buddhism.

此外, 被聘任者在兩種情況下將會成為新成立的藏傳佛教講座教授的可能人選: (1) 聘任時即以正教授聘任或 (2) 將來升等考核通過且升任正教授以後.
