Love Animal, Make War?
I recently watched two episodes of this TV program on Animal Channel, called Whale War. Briefly saying, the show is about how a ship with a group of animal activists (The Sea Shepherd) chasing a Japanese whale hunting ship on the ocean around Antarctic. The show is greatly entertained in terms of how the war is childish (in a fun and kind way, I need some of the political correct here) and tricky on one hand. On the other hand, the show keeps me thinking about the problematic motivation of the animal activists.
I like whale. The picture of Humpback Whale is once on my desktop image. I understand how it is a spectacular spice and how they can be consider very spiritual. When the show shows the image of how the Japanese ship hunted the whale, it was indeed incredibly uncomfortable to watch. Nevertheless, why we have the righteous to stop whale hunting but not, for instance, deer hunting. The most instinct answer comes to my mind is: whale is the spice that is close to distinct. In this way, the argument is come from that the number of whales is much more less than it should be, so we are more responsible in protecting whale than deer. As much as the argument sounds pretty, can we value the importance of any spice simply with the number of them? Essentially, there is no right and wrong in the issue of whale hunting. There are different believes about if human beings should stop whale hunting. Therefore, I found the problem comes from that the show portrayed the Japanese whale-hunting ship as the evil ship and the animal activists are the justice knights. The Sea Shepherd has the right to raise the war in the name of their love with whale and they have all the right to persuade people to join their believes. Yet, they do not have the right to draw the line as they are the right side and the whale hunters are in the wrong side.
Regardless about the serious/boring discussing about if there is problem that the Sea Shepherd are the shepherd with god’s right, the war is very fun to watch. The weapon includes Stink Bomb http://animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/pictures/ from children’s war and Media from the trickiest adult’s world. In the two episodes I watched, they first attack the Japanese ship by throwing stink bomb on their deck and later the Sea Shepherd sent two activists to board on the Japanese whale-hunting ship without notice and permission. After the Japanese tight these two invaders with ropes and kept them on the ship, the captain of the Sea Shepherd released the story to the media as the Japanese keeps the protestor as hostages http://animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/pictures/. If you identified with the Sea Shepherd, the show provides the straightforward way to release your anger by throwing stink bombs. Also, it provides dramatic moments when the two “heroes” being kept by the “evil” Japanese whale hunters.
