Common techniques in Chinese document translation

Mastering techniques in Chinese document translation is not easy given the various difficulties that translators encounter. First, non-native English speakers find it difficult to learn and understand the language due to difference in history, culture and customs. People from the UK and the US may find English sentence structures logical but for non-native speakers, they are considered illogical and irregular. Second, despite consulting a dictionary, translators find it hard to search for suitable words or terms to represent certain Chinese expressions. Moreover, some translators are unfamiliar with documents that contain cultural data and this could lead to errors in translation. With all these challenges, translators need to have a comparison and summary of the characteristics of both languages to learn common techniques and patterns, in order to avoid errors in translation. All these techniques are translation skills that have to be developed.

Both Chinese and English words are used in different parts of speech or have multiple meanings. In Chinese document translation, it is important to identify the meaning of key words in the original text in order to have an accurate translation. This can be achieved through the following methods:

I. Determining the meaning of a word in a sentence according to the parts of speech
They are like two peas in a pod.他們相似極了。(Adjective)
He likes mathematics more than physics.他喜歡數學甚於喜歡物理。(Verb)
Wheat, oat, and the like are cereals.小麥、燕麥等等皆屬穀類。(Noun)

II. Determining the meaning of a word based on the context and usage of the word in a sentence
He is the last man to come .他是最後來的。
He is the last person capable to do this job .他最不配做這個工作。
He should be the last person to blame.怎麼也不該怪他。
This is the last place where I expected to meet you .我怎麼也沒料到會在這個地方見到你。

This is achieved through the following aspects:

I. Semantic translation: an extended translation based on context and logic for words or phrases that are difficult to translate literally
The energy of the sun reaches the earth in the form of light and heat .

II. Specific meaning of the word: Some general words can be converted into specific terms based on Chinese language standards.
The last rocket went higher and the Apollo was sent to orbit around the earth.

III. Abstract meaning: Some words are converted into abstract words or specific words are converted into general terms based on Chinese language standards.

Semantics is an important factor in Chinese document translation translation. During the translation process, there are times when certain words could not be found in the English dictionary. The translated text then becomes obscure and the exact meaning of the original text is lost or appears misleading when arbitrary translation or word-to-word translation is done. Therefore, the basic meaning of the word is extended according to context and logic.

Problems in English to Chinese Document Translation

Currently, there are several problems found in Chinese document translation and they are as follows:

I. Omission of Translation, Adding Unnecessary Text and Literal Translation
In Chinese document translation, it's common to add words or sentences that don't exist in the original texts randomly. Some translators translate the texts without having an overall understanding of it and make the error of doing a literal translation of the document.

II. Inappropriate Style
Document usually is more complicated than general texts as they are formal and rigid in style, uses elegant yet logical words, contributing to the material's coherence overall. The passive voice is used quite often, which is a characteristic of legal documents. However, if the translator doesn't grasp the style properly or misunderstands it, he/she may make various mistakes in translation.

III. Inadequate Understanding of the Original English Text
In the pursuit of precision, legal text always adopts elegant wording, long sentences and complex structures. Translators who are not proficient in the source language, added to a lack of familiarity and knowledge with legal terms and styles may not thoroughly understand the original text and make various mistakes in Chinese document translation.

IV. Poor Language Culture
Some translators are only language proficient in a specific field and thus, may not be as efficient translating fields beyond their expertise. Sometimes, they may misunderstand the documents because of their poor language skills in the source language or they may use the wrong terms or translation approach in the target language even though they understood the original text just fine. With such instances, inconsistent, illogical and confusing sentence structures, and and inappropriate expressions may be used in the translation.

V. Mistakes Caused by Cultural Difference
Any kind of language is not simply a combination of words, phrases and sentences, but an incorporation of the nation's history, philosophy, art, psychology and other aspects. Different languages are a manifestation of every area's unique culture, which makes their conversion more complex. Translation can solve the problem of language barriers, while cultural difference is a major stumbling block, which is more evident and difficult in Chinese document translation. Due to the nature of the documents and its purpose, translators must be careful in legal text translation.

Techniques Often Used in Chinese Document Translation

It's not easy to truly master the techniques of Chinese document translation since translators will meet various difficulties in Chinese document translation. Firstly, all English learners share the same view: it's difficult to have a grasp of the English language due to the difference in history, culture and customs. The English sentences which are regarded as logical by people from England and America are illogical and intermittent in Chinese. Secondly, there is a difference in Chinese expression: translators may get dizzy looking for an equivalent word just like looking for a key anxiously to open a box with no result. In addition, it demands a high level of cultural knowledge since the article we translate may relate to a wide range of fields, most of which are unfamiliar to us. If we have no corresponding cultural knowledge, errors or mistranslation is inevitable. Because of all those difficulties, we need to have a contrast and summary of the features of the two languages to find a general expressive law, thus avoiding errors in translation. All those expressive laws are the translation skills we have mentioned.

We need to be skilled at identifying the meanings of the key words in the original sentence after having a grasp of the structure of the original sentence in Certified Chinese translation, in order to have a smoothly translated text . We may adapt the following two methods to identify the lexical meanings:

I. Determining the meaning of a word according to the parts of speech in the sentence
They are like two peas in a pod.他們相似極了。(Adjective)
He likes mathematics more than physics.他喜歡數學甚於喜歡物理。(Verb)
Wheat, oat, and the like are cereals.小麥、燕麥等等皆屬穀類。(Noun)

II. Determining the word meaning based on the context and collocation of the word in the sentence
He is the last man to arrive .他是最後來的。
He is the last person for such a job .他最不配做這個工作。
He should be the last man to blame.怎麼也不該怪他。

This is the last place where I expected to meet you .我怎麼也沒料到會在這個地方見到你。
Meaning implication is one of the skills we often adopt in Chinese document translation. During the translation process, we sometimes cannot find a proper word in the English dictionary. The translated text will be obscure so that the exact expression of the original text can not be achieved or even cause misunderstanding if carrying out arbitrary translation or word-to-word translation. In such cases, we can extend the meaning of a word from its basic meaning in accordance with the context and the logical relations. The following three aspects can be considered in meaning extension.

I. Semantic translation: we can have an extended translation according to the context and the logical relations when encountering words or phrases difficult or inappropriate to literally translate.
The energy of the sun comes to the earth mainly as light and heat .太陽能主要以光和熱的形式傳到地球。

II. Specifying the word meaning: Some relatively general words will be converted into specific words according to the Chinese convention.
The last stage went higher and took the Apollo into orbit around the earth.最後一級火箭升得更高,把"阿波羅號"送進圍繞地球運行的軌道。

III. Abstraction of the word meaning: Some concrete words will be converted into relatively abstract words or the relatively vivid words are converted into general words according to the Chinese convention
Every life has its roses and thorns .每個人的生活都有甜有苦。

Chinese Document Translation Shares Its Works

Translators from Chinese document translation service once did the trail translation for the following novels. And it is a proud to share with you.

The roots of the Notting Hill Carnival are said to originate in Trinidad and Tobago, a small island country in the Caribbean. To create the theme of the carnival each year, the organizers look at the historical and cultural models that continue to come out of Africa and the Caribbean. The organizers say that they also want to show the benefits and difficulties created by the influence of the traditions that Europeans brought to their native countries. They believe that this type of information makes the carnival educational as well as entertaining. From the Trinidadian point of view, the carnival reflects the social and political experiences of Afro-Caribbean people in Britain.

Thousands of people gather along the sides of the streets and wait for the parade of rainbow-colored costumes to appear. From feathers to smiles, the performers in the festival have it all. Steel drums, dancers, and singers bring back the traditional ways of the ancestors as the people celebrate all night long. Stages, mimes, and costumes create performances for everyone to enjoy. The audience seeks a balance of rhythm and movement from the performers. If everything is right, a bond is established between the people who are performing on stage.

The young and old come together to remember the traditional times. Food is a major part of the festival. Foods from West Africa to Asia mean that there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Notting Hill Carnival promises to be a place where ideals are translated into designs. Balance, colors, rhythms, and movements expose new themes to the people each year. The many cultural influences at the Notting Hill Carnival create a large base for understanding among the people of Britain. The carnival is also known as the August Bank Holiday Monday.

These balances will have to be struck and calibrated every year in every country in this new global economy.

Therefore, translation is not only a form of language exchange or skill application, but also the translators and translators' deep comprehension of cultures and languages. There are on-site translation and written language translation. Although they are quite similar, they have different characteristics in terms of work environment and requirements. Shuobo Translation Services aims to discuss the characteristics and requirements involved in translation to determine the limitations and nature of this type of work.

A. Timeliness: The most prominent feature of Chinese document translation is immediate or on-the-spot efficiency. Due to time constraints and limited occasions, translators do not have enough time to consider expressions or terminologies when communicating. They have to understand two languages and convey information that their minds instantly absorb in a given time. This requires translators to react quickly, remember things instantly and be proficient in communicating in two languages within a short period of time.

B. The nature and characteristics of the job determine the accuracy, speed, quality and coherence of the translation. For general translation, the translator should clearly and promptly express the ideas and information of both parties without sounding obscure or awkward. Translation has specific rules for it to be carried out successfully.

Successful translation does not only promote good communication and information exchange, but also creates balance and harmony between two parties. During a conversation, both parties should appear to have direct communication or dialogue without unnecessary distraction from the translator. With the help of the translator, the parties can freely and amicably exchange ideas or express themselves clearly when resolving disputes.

Translators should possess the following basic qualities:
A. Good language and verbal skills
B. Strong logical thinking and good memory
C. Fast response and adaptability
D. Wide knowledge

In summary, an translator should master the characteristics and rules of Chinese document translation. S/he must have a strong foundation to be able to interpret well. S/he must adapt to different techniques as well as increase language and cultural knowledge in order to deliver and interpret information promptly and effectively.

Essential Writing Techniques in Chinese Document

A. During the Chinese document translation we found that English grammar is structure-oriented while Chinese grammar is semantic -oriented. In terms of structure, the former is more logical, while the latter is more expressive.

Example: Children will play with dolls equipped with personality chips, computers with inbuilt personalities will be regarded as workmates rather than tools, people will enjoy watching television will smell-o-vision system and the digital age will have arrived.
Translation:兒童將與裝有個性晶片的玩具娃娃玩耍,具有個性內置的電腦將被視為工作夥伴而不是工具,人們將在氣味電視前休閒,到這時數位時代就來到了。

This English sentence is made up of four separate compound sentences. The first three sentences are in the simple future tense while the last one is in the future perfect tense. The sentences are connected using different tenses, commas and the coordinating conjunction "and". The Chinese version has a simpler structure. The relationship of the sentences is fully presented semantically. The first three sentences have a parallel relationship, and the last one is the result.

B. While in the Chinese document translation, translators will know there are more long sentences in English grammar than in Chinese. Since there are rules in English grammar, many words can be expressed in one long sentence as long as the structure is correct. By contrast, Chinese grammar is based on human expression. Different meanings have to be expressed in different sentences since every word has meaning. Most English sentences are long and complex, while Chinese sentences are short and simple in structure.

Example: Interest in historical methods had arisen less from the external challenge that history as an intellectual discipline has to offer and more from internal disputes among historians.
Translation:人們對歷史研究方法產生了興趣,這與其說是因為外部對歷史作為一門知識學科的有效性提出了挑戰,還不如說是因為歷史學家內部發生了爭吵。

The original sentence is quite long, made up of 27 words without any punctuation. It conveys the meaning of the entire sentence through grammar and structure, with the adverbial clause "less from... and more from" to modify the verb "arisen". In the Chinese sentence, the important phrase"產生興趣" is expressed as an independent clause with two different meanings expressed in different sentences. The sentences are analyzed separately.

C. There are more subordinate clauses in English grammar than in Chinese. In English, long modifiers or subordinate clauses can make sentences long and complex, while subordinate clauses connected by clause indicators make the whole sentence complete. In contrast, Chinese grammar has more short sentences with loose structure. Therefore, subordinate clauses in English are often translated using short sentences in Chinese.

Example: On the whole, a conclusion can be drawn with a certain degree of confidence, but only if a child is assumed to have had the same attitude towards the test as the other one whom he is compared to, and only if he was not punished due to his lack of relevant information.
Translation: 總的來說,得出這樣一個結論是有一定程度把握的,但是必須具備兩個條件:能夠假定這個孩子對測試的態度和與他相比的另一個孩子的態度相同;他也沒有因缺乏別的孩子已掌握的有關知識而被扣分。

The two clauses in English with the words "only if" make the entire sentence complex, but the coordinate conjunctions "but" and "and" make it logical: …能夠得出結論…但是只要…而且只要…. (but only if...and only if…) in Chinese. Although there are no subordinate clauses in Chinese, the version is still clear.

D. There are more pronouns in English grammar and more nouns in Chinese grammar. In English grammar, there are personal pronouns like "we, you, he, they", etc. as well as relative pronouns like" that, which" etc., which are used in long and complex sentences to maintain cohesion and avoid repetition. In Chinese grammar, there are also pronouns, but not as many. Given the loose structure and short sentences, it is semantically clearer to use short sentences in Chinese.

Example: There will be television talk shows hosted by robots, and cars with pollution monitors that will disable them when they cause problems.
Translation: 屆時,將出現由機器人主持的電視訪談節目及裝有污染監測器的汽車,一旦這些汽車污染超標(或違規),監測器就會使其停駛。

E. There are more passive sentences in English grammar than in Chinese, especially in the scientific and technical use of English. Although there are words like"被" "由" etc. that denote a passive state, it is more common to see passive sentences in English. Therefore, when translating, a passive sentence in English is often expressed as an active sentence in Chinese. Here are some Chinese translations of common passive sentence patterns:
It must be pointed out that… 必須指出…
It must be admitted that… 必須承認…
It is imagined that… 人們認為…
It cannot be denied that… 不可否認…
It will be seen from this that… 由此可知…
It should be realized that… 必須認識到…
It is (always) stressed that... 人們(總是)強調…
It may be said without fear of exaggeration that… 可以毫不誇張地說…

These passive sentences are frequently used in scientific and technical English. Translators should be familiar with these fixed patterns and understand the voice change in translation.
Example: It is imagined by many that the operations of the common mind can be by no means compared with these processes and that they have to be acquired by a sort of special training.
Translation:許多人認為,普通人的思維活動根本無法與科學家的思維活動相比,認為這些思維活動必須經過某種專門訓練才能掌握。

There are three passive voices in this English sentence; namely, "is imagined, be compared, be acquired" which are all translated in Chinese using the active voice"認為、相比、掌握".

There are some passive words in English that should be translated in Chinese to make the Chinese document translationversion appear more natural. Example: New sources of energy must be found, and this will take time, but it is not likely to result in any situation that will restore (return; recovery, rehabilitation; recover, recovery) affordable and abundant energy that we have had in the past. Translation: 必須找到新的能源,這需要時間;而過去我們感覺到的那種能源價廉而充足的情況將不大可能再出現了。

Translators' Enjoyment- Certified Certified Chinese

It's said that a translator is similar to a beautiful angel whose upper body is graceful and enchanting forever, but whose lower body is struggling under water.Common people just see their brilliance and beauty, but do not realize their actual hardships. No matter how hard it is, a translator will have his/her relaxing moments. Now let's appreciate the enjoyment brought about by Certified Chinese translation.

In the early years of the Republic of China, a foreign reporter who worked for a magazine spoke good Chinese. However, some Certified Chinese translation idioms or vocabulary cited from scriptures often made his statements confusing or quite puzzling. For instance, he would translate the sentence "胡適先生,馳騁文壇" into "Hu Shi usually has a ride on a horse on a reading table.". When translating Chinese into foreign languages, foreigners tend to adopt the literal translation method, leading to the confusion among the listeners/readers. For example, the phrase "一諾千金" will be translated into "If you agree, you should pay 1 dollar." "連中三元"will be translated into "3 silver dollars is connected". A sinologist interpreted the line "月是故鄉明" as "it's totally pitch-dark except for the bright moon in my hometown.".

Translation Quality is an Important Variable to Consider when

As the saying goes, cheap goods are usually of poor quality. When we choose one commodity, we pay more attention to its cost performance. It is not correct to simply say cheap goods are usually poor in quality, since a high price also does not certainly guarantee good quality. The same goes for translation companies. Clients shouldn't judge or choose one certified Chinese translation mainly based on its price, but ensure choosing one with a reasonable translation price and which produces good quality.

From a global perspective, China's labor market is still relatively cheap in cost. After all, China is still a developing country and lags far behind in terms of wage standard than developed countries. Recently, more and more foreign multinational companies choose to develop and invest in the Chinese market. In addition to the shift in their main business, many multinational companies choose to build factories in China, which largely results from China's cheap labor, to indirectly increase the commodity competitiveness in the international market. Economic exchanges have also promoted cultural exchange. More and more foreigners have begun to learn Chinese, and more and more foreign companies are dealing with China. Therefore, certified Chinese translation becomes a necessity. As a foreign company, would you choose translation service providers in your own country or the local translation services in China for English to Chinese translations especially? We believe that you should select the latter for two reasons. First, compared with other foreign language translators, Chinese translators are much cheaper in cost. Second, local translators in China are more familiar with the Chinese culture and Chinese language than those in foreign translation companies. Therefore, for legal translations, in particular, our own local translation companies are more adept than others in doing such.

How Certified Chinese Translation Do the Right Western Food

The author of a certified Chinese translation service recently visited a number of western restaurants, most of which adopted the traditional western menu mode, that is, a list of cooking methods and raw materials in both English and Chinese. However, lots of local people refuse to go to western restaurants because they couldn't understand the menu which is in a foreign language. Without knowledge of English and French, they may order four kinds of soup instead of the appetizer, soup, entree and dessert. Today, most menus in western restaurants adopt Chinese in detail, including the main ingredients, preparation, serving and taste.

Chinese menus are usually prepared by the staff in the restaurant based on the sample dish and the ingredient, cooking method and serving. Sometimes, it is extremely difficult to translate some ingredients which are indigenous to a particular country and are only in English, Italian, Spanish, French, etc. In the old times, foreign customers accounted for more than 90% of a restaurant's clientele. With some improvement measures, the Chinese customers now account for 30% of the entirety nowadays, the Chinese menu being one of the most important reasons.

"Chinese is important for each industry. For example, the movie Ghost was originally translated literally as 《幽靈》,and later as 《第六感生死戀》. Apparently, the latter certified Chinese translation is more appropriate and reflects the meaning of the film. "Therefore, Chinese descriptions should be simple and concise, elegant and vivid.

After some study, the author found that there are still some problems with the Chinese menu, especially in Western restaurants, where there are various kinds of dessert and pizza. For example, the dessert Crème Brulée, a kind of egg dessert made by caramel, is translated as "烤佈雷"literally, which makes it hard for the readers to understand the food and the ingredient. Aside from Tiramisu, Zabaglione is also one famous Italian dessert, which is made by mixing egg yolk, sugar and Marsala wine until thick, and served in a mild temperature, but it is translated as "薩巴里安尼" in most restaurants which confuses people a lot. Cuba's special dish, Ropa Vieja, is actually a kind of Cuban beef stew, but it is translated as "舊衣服" in Chinese with a very vague meaning.

"Creating Chinese descriptions for western food is indeed a challenge. Miss Yang who occasionally goes to western restaurants told us that she was often stuck in an awkward situation wherein she neither understands the foreign menu nor the Chinese menu even if the waiter explains it to them for several times. Therefore, the appropriate description or illustration is quite important.

"In addition, some restaurants only translate the menu literally without attention to the story behind the dish. For example, Margaret pizza is a traditional Italian pizza with a legendary story: Queen Margaret of England liked the pizza very much, so it was named after her. Again, a typical Australian dessert called Pavlova is one kind of cake made by protein cream, and most restaurants translate it as "帕洛瓦". In fact, it is the name of one famous Russian ballet dancer. The Australian named this dish in honor of her performances in Australia."

Flower meaning is to flowers what story is to food. A good certified Chinese translationdescription creates a vivid picture of the dish and arouses one's appetite, which will make people willing to pay for it. For example, both the Golden Fish Burger of KFC and Big Mac Fish Burger of McDonalds have similar raw materials, which are the burgers with fried cod and vegetable salad, but with different names. They are vivid and easy to remember, which have already became a standard and used for marketing purposes.

Grasping the Seven Strategies in Certified Chinese

Certified Chinese translation is the process wherein Chinese is used to carry out an accurate presentation of the English text. We need to notice the following aspects in translation: firstly, translators are supposed to convey the meanings of sentences or articles rather than the structure; secondly, translation is not a simple transformation of the structure into another language. The process of translation can be generally divided into three stages: reading and comprehension, expression in Chinese as well as revising and polishing. The common translation methods include:

The modern world is experiencing the rapid development of science and technology.

I. Conversion of Parts of Speech: There's a huge gap between the two language systems of Chinese and English, thus the structures and expressions of the two languages also vary greatly. Consequently, we need to make a conversion of the parts of speech in the original text (such as the conversion of verbs to nouns and adjectives to nouns, etc.) to achieve a smoothly translated text. For instance,
The modern world is experiencing the rapid development of science and technology.
[Analysis] The adjective "rapid" is converted to adverbial in Chinese.
We need clean air, but unfortunately, air pollution is generally present, especially in cities.

II. Supplementation: If we conduct a literal translation of some English sentences, there will most likely be some loss in meaning. Thus, supplementation of Chinese is necessary to be faithful to the original text and completely reproduce the meaning of the original text in accordance with the meaning, figures of speech and syntactic needs.
For example:
We need clean air, but unfortunately, air pollution is generally present, especially in cities.
[Analysis] "如此" is added in the Chinese translation text in order to avoid the incomplete expression of "尤其是在城市裏".
There is no snow, the leaves are gone from the trees, the grass is dead.

III. Omission Translation Method: The literal translation of some words in the original text will lead to a cumbersome translation and will not conform with the customary Chinese writing style due to the gap in wording and grammatical structures between English and Chinese. Under this circumstance, some articles, pronouns, prepositions or conjunctions may be omitted without affecting the transmission of the meaning of the original text. For example:
There is no snow, the leaves are gone from the trees, the grass is dead.
[Analysis] The concept of "葉落" in Chinese is easy to understand, thus "from the trees" is omitted in the translation.
He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile.

IV. Progressive Translation: The original text will be translated successively according to the order in the English expression, thus contributing to the basic unanimity of the translated text with the original text. For instance:
He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile.
[Analysis] The order of the English sentence is identical to the order in Chinese in terms of structure.
It is our task to put up a nuclear power station somewhere by the end of this year.

V. Regressive Translation Method: As for complex English sentences, the latter part sometimes needs to be translated first, making the translation order from the latter part to the former parts of the original text.
For example:
It is our task to put up a nuclear power station somewhere by the end of this year.
[Analysis] When translating a series of adverbials in English, translators should organize the translated sentences according to the adverbials of time, place and manner.
During the meeting, a decision was made to transfer a part of the students to another school.

VI. Splitting: This lengthy English sentence will be split into several independent sentences with the original sequence to keep a coherence of the sentence.
For Example:
During the meeting, a decision was made to transfer a part of the students to another school.
[Analysis] The post positive attributive of the subject in the sentence is relatively long and the predicate is very short, so the post-infinitive and the main clause are separated in order to have a balanced sentence.
One can perhaps get a clearer picture of Japan's acute population pressure by imagining what Switzerland would be like if that small and mountainous country were inhabited by 28 million people instead of the 5.7 million at present.

VII. Synthesis: Translators conduct a synthetic processing of the whole sentence based on the time order or logical order after careful consideration. The literal meanings of English and Chinese are not completely equivalent, but the connotative meanings are the same.
For Example:
One can perhaps get a clearer picture of Japan's acute population pressure by imagining what Switzerland would be like if that small and mountainous country were inhabited by 28 million people instead of the 5.7 million at present.
[Analysis] The focus of the original sentence is on "One can…population pressure". Based on the Chinese convention, followed by a summary, the narrative will be done first, thus the original text will be processed from the middle part of the sentence "by imagining…" to the beginning of the sentence. The free translation is also applied in the Chinese sentence.
The up mentioned techniques are commonly used in certified Chinese translationprocedure. We will share more on this topic.

Grasping Seven Strategies in Certified Chinese Translation

英譯中就是運用中文把英語所表達的內容準確而完整地重新表達出來的過程或結果。在翻譯過程中,值得注意的是:一在翻譯需要表達的是句子或文章的內容,而不是結構;二翻譯過程中,不是將兩種語言的結構進行簡單的轉換。翻譯的過程一般分為閱讀理解、中文表達和審校潤色三個階段。常見的方法有:
Certified Chinese translation is the process or consequence in which Chinese is used to carry out an accurate presentation of the English text. We need to notice the following aspects in translation: firstly, translators are supposed to convey the meanings of sentences or articles rather than the structure; secondly, translation is not a simple transformation of the structures in two languages. The process of translation can be generally divided into three stages: reading and comprehension, expression in Chinese as well as revising and polishing. The common translation methods include:

一、詞類轉譯法:由於英語和中文是懸殊甚大的不同的語言體系,所以在語言結構與表達方式上都存在很大的差異,這就要求我們對原文中的一些詞語的詞性進行轉化(如:動詞轉化為名詞,形容詞轉化為名詞等),才能使譯文暢通。例如:
The modern world is experiencing rapid development of science and technology.
當今世界的科學技術正在迅速地發展。
[分析]將句中的形容詞rapid轉譯為中文中的副詞。
I. Conversion of Parts of Speech: There's a huge gap between the two language systems of Chinese and English, thus the structures and expressions of the two languages enjoy a great difference. Consequently, we need to make a conversion of parts of speech of some words in the original text (such as the conversion of verbs to nouns and adjectives to nouns etc) to achieve the fluent translated text. For instance,
The modern world is experiencing rapid development of science and technology.
當今世界的科學技術正在迅速地發展。
[Analysis] The adjective "rapid" is converted to adverbial in Chinese.

二、增補法:有些英語字句如果照字面的意思翻譯,意念是不完整的,必須根據意義、修辭或句法的需要增補一些中文,才能更加忠實於原文,使原文的思想更完整地再現。例如:
We need clean air, but unfortunately, air pollution is generally present, especially in cities.
我們需要清新的空氣,但遺憾的是,空氣污染普遍存在,在城市中尤其如此。
[分析]本句為了避免"尤其是在城市裏"的表達不完整,增加了"如此"。
II. Supplementation: If we conduct a literal translation of some English sentences, there will be losses o meaning. Thus, supplementation of Chinese is necessary to be faithful to the original text and completely reproducing the meaning of the original text in accordance with the needs of meanings, figures of speech and syntactic needs.
For example:
We need clean air, but unfortunately, air pollution is generally present, especially in cities.
我們需要清新的空氣,但遺憾的是,空氣污染普遍存在,在城市中尤其如此。
[Analysis] "如此" is added in the Chinese translation text in order to avoid the incomplete expression of "尤其是在城市裏".

三、省譯法:由於英語和中文在用詞和語法結構上的差異,原文中的某些詞如果直譯出來會使譯文顯得累贅,不符合中文的表達習慣。在這種情況下,就要省略一些冠詞、代詞、介詞或連詞等省去不譯,但是不能影響原文的意義表達。例如:
There was no snow, the leaves were gone from the trees, the grass was dead.
天未下雪,但葉落草枯。
[分析]在中文中"葉落"的概念非常清楚,所以省譯了from the trees。
III. Omission Translation Method: The literal translation of some words in the original text will lead to a cumbersome translation text and be in unconformity with the expression custom in Chinese due to the gap of wording and grammatical structures between English and Chinese. Under this circumstance, some articles, pronouns, prepositions or conjunctions may be omitted without affecting the transmission of the meaning of the original text. For example:
There was no snow, the leaves were gone from the trees, the grass was dead.
天未下雪,但葉落草枯。
[Analysis] The concept of "葉落" in Chinese is easy to understand, thus "from the trees" is omitted in the translation.

四、順譯法:也就是說按照英語表達的層次順序,依次翻譯英語句子,從而使譯文與英語原文的順序基本一致。例如:
He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile.
他看得出,她一生含辛茹苦,如今苦盡甘來,嘴邊總是帶著溫柔、聖潔的微笑。
[分析]英語句子的順序,從意思上講,與中文句子的順序是一致的。
IV. Progressive Translation: The original text will be translated successively according to the order in the English expression, thus contributing to the basic unanimity of the translated text with the original text. For instance:
He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile.
他看得出,她一生含辛茹苦,如今苦盡甘來,嘴邊總是帶著溫柔、聖潔的微笑。
[Analysis] The order of the English sentence is identical to the order of a Chinese one in terms of meaning.

五、逆譯法:也就是對於句子結構複雜的英語句子,可以先翻譯全句的後部,在依次向前逆序翻譯前面的句子。例如:
It is our task to build up a nuclear power station somewhere by the end of this year.
我們的任務是於今年年底在某地建成一座原子能發電站。
[分析]翻譯英語裡面的一系列狀語時,必須按照時間狀語、地點狀語和方式狀語的順序中文習慣表達習慣來組織語句。
V. Regressive Translation Method: As for a complex English sentence, the latter part will take the priority to be translated. The translation order will be from the latter part to the former parts in turn.
For example:
It is our task to build up a nuclear power station somewhere by the end of this year.
我們的任務是於今年年底在某地建成一座原子能發電站。
[Analysis] When translating a series of adverbials in English, translators should organize the translated sentences according to the adverbials of time, place and manner.

六、分譯法:也就是採取化整為零的方法將整個英語長句翻譯為幾個獨立的句子,順序基本不變,前後保持連貫。例如:
At the meeting decision was made to transfer a part of the students to another school.
會議上作出一項決定,把一部分學生轉到另一所學校去。
[分析]本句的主語的後置定語比較長,而謂語很短,為了使句子結構勻稱,避免頭重腳輕的現象,就把後面的不定式與主句分開翻譯了。
VI. Splitting: The entire long English sentence will be split into several independent sentences with the original sequence to keep a coherence of the sentence.
For Example:
At the meeting decision was made to transfer a part of the students to another school.
會議上作出一項決定,把一部分學生轉到另一所學校去。
[Analysis] The postpositive attributive of the subject in the sentence is relatively long and the predicate is very short, so the post-infinitive and the main clause are separated in order to have a balanced sentence.

七、綜合法:也就是說翻譯時經過仔細推敲,或按照時間先後,或按照邏輯順序,有順有逆、有主有次地對全句進行綜合處理,英語和中文的字面意思不完全對應,但是內涵是相同的。例如:
One can perhaps get a clearer picture of Japan's acute population pressure by imagining what Switzerland would be like if that small and mountainous country were inhabited by 28 million people instead of the 5.7 million at present.
只要設想一下,假若那小小的瑞士居住的人口不是現在的五百七十萬,而是兩千八百萬,瑞士會是什麼情景,人民便會清楚地理解日本所面臨的人口壓力是多麼大。
[分析]原文的重點在於One can…population pressure,按照中文習慣,應該先敍事,後總結,所以翻譯時從中間by imagining…入手,最後回到句首,譯出One can…。而且中文句子的意思也有"意譯"的成分。
VII. Synthesis: certified Chinese translation conduct a synthetic processing of the whole sentence based on the time order or logical order after a careful consideration.
只要設想一下,假若那小小的瑞士居住的人口不是現在的五百七十萬,而是兩千八百萬,瑞士會是什麼情景,人民便會清楚地理解日本所面臨的人口壓力是多麼大。
[Analysis] The focus of the original sentence is on "One can…population pressure". Based on the Chinese convention, followed by a summary, the narrative will be done first, thus the original text will be processed from the middle part of the sentence "by imagining…" to the beginning of the sentence at last, translating "One can…". The free translation is also applied in the certified Chinese translation

Certified Chinese Translation Appreciation: Business Journal

For our certified Chinese translation service, we are specialized in so many fields-medical magazines, legal documents, business contracts etc. Today, we are sharing our business journal translations as follow:

Personalization? No Thanks.
Lots of companies are buying sophisticated software to make personalized
Pitches to website customers. Problem is, customers don't seem to care.
需要個性化服務嗎? 不,謝謝
很多公司都在購買隨網路消費者而變的個性化軟體服務問題是:消費者似乎並不以為然。

E-commerce companies face a constant question: how much should they personalize their sites? We conducted a study of more than 300 on-line consumers and found out what some of them might not have realized themselves. Rather than have some state-of the- art technology figure out their interests and surprise and delight them with products and services they would undoubtedly love, most consumers would prefer to just customize Web site interactions for themselves.
電子商務公司一直都在面臨著同一個問題:他們應該對網路服務進行多少個人化調整?
我們對300多名線上用戶進行調查研究,發現有些人對此毫無意識。而有些人則對這種個性化的產品和服務表示讚賞和歡迎。大多數的消費者更傾向于使用用戶化的網路交易平臺。

To explain, it helps first to distinguish between customization and personalization. Customization lets a site visitor specify his or her own preferences. A good example is the MyYahtx feature at Yahoti.com. Users can instruct the site to automatically display the weather forecast for their town, track their favorite stocks, or give prominence on the home page to local sports news.

需要說明的是:用戶化和個性化的服務區別在於:用戶化服務讓網站訪問者詳細_列,所需要的東西,典型的例子如MyYahtx用戶可以指示網站自動顯示當地未來幾天的天氣情況,查看他們心儀的股票走向,或者把當地的體育新聞設置在首頁。

By contrast, personalization doesn't ,rely on explicit user instructions. It uses artificial intelligence to find patterns in customers'choices or demo graphics and to extrapolate from them.Probably the best-known example is Amazon.com's personalized book and music recommendations. The great assumption about personalization has been that it would be forethought .
相反,個性化服務不受控于直接客戶的指示,它是使用人工智慧在客戶選擇或大眾的統計中,搜索相似的模式並從中推導出。最著名的大概是亞馬遜網站的個人書籍和音樂推薦。最大的個性化設想就是:先見之明。

Certified Chinese Translation Appreciation: Business Related

Just like the last time saying: our certified Chinese translation service, we are specialized in so many fields-medical magazines, legal documents, business contracts etc. Today, we continue to share business related translations as follow:

I.investment: 投資. This word should be converted into a verb meaning "to invest in America".

II.subsidiary:子公司,附屬公司

III.branch office辦事處

IV.tax treatment稅收待遇
Example:
In general, investment in the Unite States will be in the form of a subsidiary. It is possible for a non-U.S. corporation to operate a branch office in the United States, but there are significant disadvantages to a branch, particularly with respect to its tax treatment.
在美國進行的投資一般都採用分公司的形式。當然美國以外的企業也可以在美國設立辦事處,不過辦事處的形式在很多方面,特別是稅收待遇問題上,還是有諸多不便。

V.be subject to:從屬於、受……的支配或管理

VI.qualify:獲得資格

VII.doing business:做生意、經營

VIII.impose on:把……施加於
Example:
Branches of non-U.S. corporations are not subject to federal regulation or registration requirements. However, each state will require a "foreign" corporation to "qualify" before "doing business"in that state. A corporation will be considered "foreign" if it is organized under the laws of another country or another state, and so this is not a requirement imposed only on.
美國以外的公司所設立的辦事處不受聯邦政府規定的約束,登記註冊也沒有什麼條件。然而,各個州都要求,任何一個"外來的"公司要想開始"經營",必須有"足夠的資格"。只要在基於別的國家或者美國的另一州的法律建立起的公司,每個州都視之為"外來的"公司。所以這一規定也並不僅僅針對美國以外的投資者。

IX.substantial presence:實際存在,實質性存在的

X.real property:不動產

XI.a stock of:量詞,修飾goods 表現存貨品

XII.distributor:經銷商
Example:
"Doing business" is a technical term that implies a substantial presence in the state. This would include the ownership or leasing of real property, the maintenance of a stock of goods for local sale, employees and the like. Selling products to local customers, either directly or through an independent sales representative or distributor, would no Interpretation:
"經營"是一個技術術語,表示這個公司事實存在於這個州。所謂事實存在的形式包括在該州擁有或者租賃房地產,為當地的銷售業務保持一定量的存貨,在當地雇用員工等等。僅僅向該州的顧客銷售產品,這本身並不構成"經營",不管這種銷售是直接進行還是通過獨立銷售代表或者經銷商進行的。

XIII.exercise control over sth. :對……予以控制
Example:
The states actually exercise little control over the qualification process other than to ensure that the qualifying entity's name is not confusingly similar to an already registered entity and that all registration fees and taxes are paid (qualification is basically a form of taxation).
各州對公司資格審查的過程實際控制很少,更多的是確保這家合格實體的名稱不與已登記註冊的公司名稱相近而造成混淆,並且確保該實體支付所有的登記註冊費和稅款(資格審查本身也就是賦稅的一種形式)。

Characteristics of a Certified Chinese Translation of Legal

Unlike common language, legal language is authoritative and powerful. Law is binding and it doesn't change according to personal taste. The same applies to legal language which is highly distinct. Thus, certified Chinese translation of legal documents should be done carefully and meticulously.

Legal content translation can be classified as a formal and rigid form of language translation. It involves professional and technical terms. It uses certain words that have distinct meanings when used in legal documents. Legal content has a special writing style which is totally different from common content, words, meanings, terms, expressions, etc.

The clauses within a legal document serve a specific purpose; therefore clients should be careful when choosing the right certified Chinese translation service. There are three types of legislative provisions: behavioral provisions, regulations and definitions. Behavioral provisions include the statement of the case which specifies the responsibilities, obligations, delegation of authority, prohibition of certain behaviors, power of authorization to a person or group, etc.

The statement in the certified Chinese translation of legal documents has a special sentence structure.
I.Legal language is a tool.
II.Legal content has distinct characteristics that are different from others.
III.A legal document has clear and specific characteristics like Chinese translation.
IV.Legal language has different semantic principles as compared to commonly used languages.

Important Principles of Certified Chinese Translation

Whether intermediate or advanced certified Chinese translation, it contains simple words that often form the basis for these articles. It is more difficult to deal with idioms, sayings and professional terms. For example, most interpreters would consider the word "collectively" to mean "總而言之" or"概括起來" in the first example. After understanding the meaning of the entire sentence, they will see the word as"累加". In this example, the adjective is made into an adverb or noun. The following are some examples.

Collectively, the Asian Countries will have a larger economy than the rest of the world put together.
亞洲國家的經濟總量將超過其他國家地區的總和。

From a small beginning at the turn of the century ……
本世紀初,基金會的數量並不多。

Inside these nations there will be mass prosperity, but with a large minority in serious poverty, and a small number who are very rich.
這些國家雖然呈現出欣欣向榮的態勢,但其中還有許多處於極端貧窮的弱勢人口,還有少部分人口極端富有。

The major feature of project money, whether its source is government or business, is that it is given on a contractual basis, a different contract for each project, so that the investigator's independence rests upon his capacity to secure a succession of contracts.
無論來自於政府或商界,專案資金的重要特點是其建立在契約上,即不同的專案可以爭取相同的專案資金,因此調查研究人員要取得獨立,就必須得到連續的研究項目。

The resulting patchwork of laws, people on all sides of the issue say, complicates a nationwide picture already clouded by scientific and ethnical questions over whether and how to restrict cloning or to ban it altogether.
在克隆問題上各方人士認為,關於是否限制克隆、如何限制克隆或索性禁止克隆的科學及倫理問題,已經使全國性立法變得撲朔迷離。而如今各種東拼西湊的法律,只會使全國性立法形成步履維艱。

A law that goes into effect on Jan.1 allows computer users in the state to refuse unwanted solicitations en masse and sue spammers who violate their wishers for as much as $1 million.
1月1日,加州通過一條法律,使得電腦使用者有權拒收垃圾郵件,並對郵件發送者提出訴訟,要求最高達一百萬美元的賠償。
