"... In 1945, the Soviet Union broke a mutual nonaggression treaty between Japan and the Soviet Union by invading and occupying southern Sakhalin.
The Japanese government abandoned its territorial claims on southern Sakhalin in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, which the Soviet Union did not take part in. The treaty also did not clarify which nation had sovereignty over the southern part of Sakhalin.
The Japanese government has since maintained that it has not been decided under international law which country has sovereignty over the southern part of Sakhalin..."

See, the military occupation, abandon territory in SFPT and yet decided under international law etc. are exactly the same scenarios concering the status of Formosa and the Pescadores .
