有次朋友聽我談起Tom Waits的專輯《Alice》，問道：「那是什麼樣的音樂？」
我這麼回答：「聲音沙啞的阿公唱的歌。」
朋友聽了，在電話另一頭大笑不已。
這樣的形容大概會氣炸Tom Waits的歌迷，不過對於沒有聽過Tom Waits的人而言，這大概是最直接能讓對方瞭解Tom Waits的方式了。

Tom Waits的嗓音低沉沙啞，加上蒼涼的樂音，喜歡的人聽了會覺得很有味道；不喜歡的人聽了會覺得他是破鑼嗓。

2002年發行的專輯《Alice》，當中的歌曲最早是Tom Waits和妻子Kathleen Brennan替一齣在1992年登台的前衛歌劇所譜寫。當時這齣戲上演了十八個月，不過歌曲全未錄製成專輯發行。延宕多年，劇中的歌曲總算在2002年收錄成專輯《Alice》，媒體均稱是Tom Waits「失落多年的瑰寶傑作」。

緩慢蒼涼的樂風、詩一般的歌詞，搭配著Tom Waits的低沉嗓音，聽者不會傷悲，只有為之深深的感動。
