不過這篇文章要談的仍舊是卡夫卡的《變形記》，那麼，變成蟲子的Gregor Samsa，到底跟Pear Jam有什麼關連？《Vitalogy》裡收錄的14首歌曲當中，"Bugs"是其中最詭異的一首歌，單純的音樂節奏模仿蟲子的動作和聲音，歌詞更是恐怖至極。恐怖的前提，必須是你也覺得屋子裡塞滿了蟲是十分駭人的景象才行。

以第一人稱開場，主角發現他家裡到處都是蟲，連他的身體裡也有蟲。屋子裡已經塞滿了蟲，但外頭還有蟲想進來。主角思索他到底要如何對付這些蟲子，殺了牠們？還是加入牠們？最後，男主角變成了蟲。

滿佈蟲子的意象很可怕，但這首歌讓我覺得更恐怖的地方，在於個人的自我意識遭到消除，失去了自我。有一陣子因為工作的關係，我必須在尖峰時間搭乘捷運，出入流量龐大的台北車站。每次跟著一大群人擠在車廂裡，出了車廂還來不及呼吸，就要趕快爭搶上下電梯、搶著走出捷運站。總在那樣的時候，覺得莫名的哀傷向我襲來，無底洞般的虛無將我吞噬。幸好，這種莫名的憂傷隨著我轉換工作跑道也漸漸消失了。

或許，就像卡謬說的，「當荒謬的人思量著自身的苦刑時，一切偶像都噤若寒蟬。當宇宙間突然間恢復了沈寂時，世間無數的詫異之聲會轟然而起。無意識的、秘密的呼喚，千萬面孔所發出的邀請，他們都是勝利的必然逆轉和必然代價。」

我很高興自己沒有變成了一隻蟲。
