Joyful Living
A mountain is not a mountain
Just a heap of earth put up for sale
Like lambs destined for the chopping block, so many slices at market prices
To feed the jackals and wolves that circle round
A mountain is not its protective foliage
It is not the waves of grassy slopes that welcome the wind,
It's not a promised land for homeless dogs to roam
It's only a strip of concrete highway, crushing
Slow-moving snails, cicadas and squirrels
A mountain is not a home
A home is supposed to be an airtight high-rise
With guards at the gate
Clean corridors and clinics
Panaceas for safe and joyful living
In your eyes
"Joyful" is not an adjective
"Living" is not a verb
But only nouns, ticking off the hours
And we are but superfluous punctuations
Waiting to be altered or deleted
For the sake of a more elegant and pleasing history

Translator's note:The Joyful Living Leper Sanitarium (Leseng Liao Yang Yuan) which is situated on a hillside in a Taipei suburb, was established during the Japanese occupation period (1895-1945) and remained in service until 1994, when the Department of Rapid Transit Systems, under pressure from local politicians, closed it down to provide a sanctuary for machinery and to build a high-rise hospital for local residents. The lepers were told to leave but some resisted and were subsequently labeled "public malefactors." I read the interview, and found out that you like Jacques Prevert. He is my favorite French poet too, and this poem "Barbara" is unique. My French teacher read it in French, ah, what a joy to my ear.--lolita
Translation of French poem
"Barbara"
by Jacques Prevert
Remember, Barbara,
It was raining unceasingly on Brest that day,
And you were walking, smiling,
Lighted up, delighted, streaming,
Under the rain.
Remember, Barbara,
It was raining unceasingly on Brest,
And I met you on Siam Street.
You were smiling,
And I was smiling likewise.
Remember, Barbara,
You whom I didn't know,
You who didn't know me,
Remember,
Remember though that day.
Don't forget.
A man was sheltered under a porch,
Streaming, delighted, lighted up,
And you threw yourself into his arms.
Remember that Barbara.
And don't bear a grudge against me
if I use the familiar form with you.
I say you (familiar form) to all whom I love.
Even if I have only seen them one time
I say you (familiar form) to all whom I love.
Even if I don't know them.
Remember, Barbara.
Don't forget
This wise and happy rain
On this happy city.
This rain on the sea,
On the shipyard,
On the boat Ouessant.
Oh, Barbara,
What a "connerie" war.
What did you become now?
Under this rain of iron,
Of fire, of sword, of blood
And the one who was squeezing you
in his arms lovingly,
Did he disappear dead or is he yet still living?
(this is loosely translated)
Oh, Barbara,
It is raining unceasingly on Brest,
As it rained before.
But it's not the same and everything is spoiled.
It's a rain of terrible and desolate mourning.
It's no longer the storm of iron, sword, bloodshed.
Very simply the clouds,
which burst as dogs,
The dogs which disappeared
With the stream on (over) Brest
And which go to rot in the distance,
In the distance very far from Brest,
Of which nothing is left.
Actually this is a very very sad poem.
HH, I hope one day, you can put this poem into your play. Have someone recite it on stage... If Ya Xian can recite the poem, with his deep, resonate voice, it will be just perfect...lolita
Simple Beauties
(Jacques Prévert's poetry)
Barbara
Remember Barbara
It rained relentlesly on Brest that day
And you walked smiling
Beaming ravishing drenched
Under the rain
Remember Barbara
It rained relentlesly on Brest that day
And I ran into you in Siam Street
You were smiling
And I smiled too
Remember Barbara
You whom I didn't know
You who didn't know me
Remember
Remember that day still
Don't forget
A man was taking cover on a porch
And he cried your name
Barbara
And you ran to him under the rain
Beaming ravishing drenched
And you threw yourself in his arms
Remember that Barbara
And don't be mad if I speak familiarly
I speak familiarly to everyone I love
Even if I've seen them only once
I speak familiarly to all who are in love
Even if I don't know them
Remember Barbara
Don't forget
That good and happy rain
On your happy face
On that happy town
That rain upon the sea
Upon the arsenal
Upon the Ushant boat
Oh Barbara
What stupidity is war
Wwhat has become of you
Under this iron rain
Of fire and steel and blood
And he who held you in his arms
Amorously
Is he dead and gone or still so much alive
Oh Barbara
It's rained all day on Brest today
As it was raining before
But it isn't the same anymore
And everything is wrecked
It's a rain of mourning terrible and desolate
Nor is it still a storm
Of iron and steel and blood
But simply clouds
That die like dogs
Dogs that disappear
In the downpour drowning Brest
And float away to rot
A long way off
A long long way from Brest
Of which there's nothing left.
