1923年諾貝爾文學獎得主，愛爾蘭詩人葉慈（William Butler Yeats 1865-1939）的詩「愛爾蘭一空軍預感死亡」（An Irish Airman Foresees His Death）裡的句子。全首詩如下：

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My county is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan\'s poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.

其中那句A lonely impulse of delight我不止一次在電影中看到引用，可是忘了片名。余光中教授將這句翻譯成：好寂寞的一陣喜悅的靈感。（余光中譯，《英美現代詩選》，台北市：大林出版社，1970）這樣的翻譯關鍵在於impulse這個字，一般有「衝動；推動；衝力；刺激；推動力」等解，手邊第四版的《牛津高階英漢雙解辭典》如是說，英文解釋為a sudden urge to act；push or thrust；stimulus；impetus等。我的問題是「衝動」可以引申解為「靈感」？

這首詩講一個年輕飛行員駕駛戰鬥機在雲端飛行，在飄渺的雲間（借用余譯文，下同），不恨敵人，不眷戀他要保護的國人，不為法律，不為責任，不為歡呼的群眾，好寂寞的一陣喜悅的靈感，驅使他直上這個騷動的雲中，思前思後，歲月虛度，如此生，如此死。

這個「好寂寞的一陣喜悅的靈感」是怎樣的一種感覺？好比一個人在寂靜的午夜，翻動一本書，其中一句話，觸動內心類似的經驗，而有所感動，如同遇到知己，是不是這樣的情緒？好像一根有靈感的針，刺到心靈深處，有所反應，感受莫名的快感。我覺得譯成「喜悅的悸動」，出發點在此。以「悸動」來說心中的感動。
