噓~ 没瞧見我在聽歌嗎?

30 年前的作品. 真的 30 年了!
30 年後的 Geddy Lee 站在舞台上是否還能依稀記起當年的狂野?
當年一又一遍繞著錄音帶聽 The Temples of Syrinx 的我, 是否還能找回當年單純享受音符得到的快樂?

其實, 有的.

當我想跟著 Geddy 吼著 We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx 的時候, 我瞥見二十年前自己年輕的臉.
 

很小的時候, 拿到一張錄音帶. 是自家轉錄的, 裡面都是國歌級的搖滾曲. 裡面有這一首歌, Still in love with you.
 

很久以後我才記得這個團叫 Thin Lizzy. 這首歌是已故主唱/Bass 手 Phil Lynott 和當時的吉他手 Gary Moore 的作品. 盪氣迴腸的一首歌.

這個版出自 Live and Dangerous 現場專輯. 一張還没收藏到的名盤. Scott Gorham 和 Brian Robertson 的吉他真棒. 兩隻 Les Paul. 愛死 Les Paul 了.
 


後來也有 Gary Moore 的 Tribute 版, 黏乎乎的, 太煽情了. Phil 的聲音比較恰到好處.
 

另一個 1983 的版本, 吉他陣加了 John Sykes. 這個版放慢了些, 也加了金屬味. 我也很喜歡.
 

今天又找回了這張小時候聽的專輯. 1986. 二十年前.

Simon & Garfunkel 的歌聽了不少, 這張倒是第一次接觸到 Paul Simon 的音樂. 上榜的 You can call me Al 裡的跳動旋律和 bass 讓我跑去買了這張專輯, 那時候一點也不知道這是一張摻有南非音樂的得獎專輯.

年紀稍長後, 發現最常想起是 Homeless 和 I know what I know 裡的傳統吟唱. 現在才發現原來無處不是 Paul 的巧思. 是的, 這是一張民俗音樂元素滿滿的流行專輯. 非常優雅地.

Mus / Dominar la Fame: Canciones (To Stop Being Hungry) / 2004

音樂在形式上多變, 區分不同種類的音樂是年輕時候做的事.

現在没時間認真聽音樂, CD 放了就忙著做事去了, 有時候忙到 CD 放完了還不記得自己剛剛聽了什麼. 這樣一來反而注意到音樂的藥效.

Mus 就是這樣的. 放了幾遍都没注意到它, 因為没有強勢的旋律和華麗的編曲. 一直到某個半夜稍歇片刻時聽到了 Mus 的音樂. 旋律進入中樞神經系統. 癱瘓.

像風一樣, 自然, 輕柔, 但是不甜, 好像感覺不到它的存在, 但是你的呼吸竟然都和它同步.

實在不知道這些音樂人怎麼做到的. 我覺得他們抓到了自然的脈動.

這是我認識 Kate 的第一次. 有 Youtube 真好, 連第一次都可以再找回來複習.

這是什麼怪東西啊? 看不懂. 可是, 很想再看一次. 這是小時候看完以後的第一個念頭. 那是臺灣剛開始流行 MTV 的年代.

歌很棒. 於是去買了在排行榜一直没爬上去的 Hounds of Love 專輯. 是卡帶, 所以你發現我是老人.

專輯也不尋常. 有一面完全没有單曲. 曲子跟曲子間好像都連在一起, 情緒上切不開.

後來, 我就一路愛她的音樂到現在了.

看到咕嚕的 blog 裡堆滿了很愛的一堆名字, 感動.

平常一起聽音樂的那一團聽的都比我年輕, 害我有些東西都不敢拿出來, 怕大家就不吭聲靜悄悄鳥獸散. 難得這位大仙也懂我這年代的好東西.

打個招呼, 送你一首老楊的歌吧. 

要說 The Cure 最狂亂的作品群, The Top 或許真的是最頂端的那一張.

那是 Pornography 後一張. 1984 年.
  
覺得是 Cure 最悲傷絕望的一張. 這張之前的作品有時會讓你覺得刺耳; 過了這張, Cure 變得在音色及編排上往好聽精緻走去, 逐漸遠離昏沉迷亂的世界, 越來越容易接受. 這張正好是個分水嶺.
  
Dressing up 是 Cure 作品裡我最愛的一首. 記得那是卡帶 A-side 最後一首, 我聽完後呆坐好久, 不敢打破那一片死寂. Robert 的唱腔運用真是精彩極了.

這張不是每一首都精彩, 但是曲風多變. 除了 Robert 的唱腔吉他和觸動人心的歌詞外, 讓樂評推崇的就是他們融合各種音樂素材的功力. 除了標準 Cure 的抑鬱糾結, post-punk, blues, 還加入大量中東音樂元素甚至進行曲.

今天中午看到 阿郎若小姐 手上拿著一張 The Cure 的 CD, 眼神看起來是認到愛團了. 突然有個很奇怪的, 時光交錯的感覺.

有的團在記憶裡的歸類是老團, 像 Led Zeppelin, 有的是超老團, 像 The Byrds 和 Bod Dylan. 有些是新團, 有的是短命曇花團. 而 The Cure 是陪著我長大的, 潛意識裡怎麼樣也沒想到他們也可能是這個世代的音樂. 記得高中時牆上的那些人頭就是他們. 裡面有個 Robert Smith 瞪著帶著黑圈的死魚眼, 每每引來我娘關切的評論.

這個團其實是以 Robert 為中心的創作組合. 團員有誰記不得了, 每張都換一些人. 最早期的 The Cure 出現在後龐克的 1979 年. 第一張作品 Three Imaginary Boys 就有一堆讓人不安的電影場景. 1980 他們把 Three Imaginary Boys 加上先前三首單曲 Killing An Arab, Boys Don't Cry 和 Jumping Someone Else's Train, 重新以 Boys Don't Cry 為名在美國發行. 有一堆好歌出自這裡, 10:15 Saturday Night 像是驚悚片的配樂, Three Imaginary Boys 現在聽還是抑鬱得化不開. Grinding Halt 是首可愛的黑色小品, 加上 Killing An Arab, Boys Don't Cry, 成為三首我覺得超酷超簡單, 卻從沒看到有大學團做過的歌.

接下來的 The Cure 維持這樣的創作基調創作了三張作品, 一張比一張陰暗, 自憐, 不安, 壓力, 配上厚得喘不過氣的編曲. 1984 年的 The top 大概是最扭曲的一張作品; 最喜歡的是這首 Dressing Up. 從第一秒鐘就營造一個讓人不寒而慄的影像. 音樂則是絶對的悽美.

而在 1982 到 1982 年, Robert Smith 開始嘗試一些較輕鬆的歌, 像 Let's Go to Bed, The Walk, The Lovecats 等. 後來這些曲子被收錄在 1984 發行的選集 Japanese Whisper 裡. 這些歌上口簡單, 而且比起其它 The Cure 標準作品來要讓人舒服得多. 這些曲子引領 The Cure 進入音樂的新階段, 讓主流市場正式認識了他們. 這一波的創作力延伸到 1985 的 Head on the Door, 而在 1987 的 Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 到達巔峰. 我覺得這是他們最經典的作品. 第一首 The Kiss, 吉他從角落一步步逼近, 慢慢纏繞全身, 然後在三分五十秒的窒息掙扎後出現 Robert Smith 的痛苦哀號. 如果你沒有在這時摔掉你的 CD player, 接下來的是 The Cure 最美的一首小品 The Catch. 這張出了一首很紅的舞曲 Why Can't I be you. 即使是舞曲, 歌詞和唱腔還是 Robert 一貫的情緒表現. 商業上的成功好像改變了 Robert 和 The Cure. 之後的音樂不再扭曲, 不再實驗, 而是逐漸成熟成為一種標準的, 精緻的, 可預期的旋律. 這時間內出現了 8 張作品, 佳作是有, 但沒有大的驚喜. 像是這首 Friday I'm in Love 就是首不錯的流行作. 歌詞很有趣.

在 2000 年時 Robert 重新重振 The Cure 名號出發, 出了 Blood flower 專輯. 雖然 Robert 年紀不小了, 歌詞還是一樣感動年輕到年老的死忠歌迷. 記得在 VH1 電視臺看到 The Cure 的現場時好感動; 那是好久沒看到的老朋友又出現在面前, 只是發福了不少. 音樂呢? 像 Guitar Player 樂評說的, 就是你以前認識的 The Cure. 固定水準的佳作. 歷經 13 張專輯, 終於在 2004 年 Robert 決定不再繼續 The Cure.

對很多人來說, Disintegration 是認識 The Cure 的開始.

對我來說, Disintegration 是 The Cure 成熟的開始, 音色商業化, 不再有無法控制的狂野, 不再有脫序的危險. 所以一開始我對這張錄音是很失望的.

十幾年後再回來聽這一張錄音. 比較能面對它是一張好專輯的想法. 平穩的, 無疼痛的, 失去知覺. 像一塊跌入咖啡裡的方糖, 慢慢崩解, 溶化, 没有一點聲響地從人世間消失. 用簡單的文字讓人掉進情緒黑洞, 是 Robert 擅長的手法. 這張的曲目安排讓你在流行曲式的偽裝下無覺地陷入他的悲慘世界. 没有一首歌打算用一點點快樂情緒把你從坑底救上來.

就放手吧, 不過是張 CD. 整張放完, 你會有機會離開的.

Lucille, B. B. King 的愛琴. 老金還常常在錄音中和它對話.

好舒服的 blues. 覺得自己坐在餐廳裡享受美食, 小小的舞台上樂手自在的奏著音樂講故事. 不需要激動, 不用搞悲憤, 生活裡已經夠多讓人難過的事情了, 没有理由要放到音樂裡再忍受一遍. 吉他音符的美就不用再提了, 這是 B.B. King, 三兩下撥弦就讓你感動到心底.

有人彈吉他苦到臉糾結, 有人手一碰到琴就滔滔不絕用一團團音符轟炸你. 我很喜歡看 Eddie Van Halen 彈吉他的自得其樂, 特別是這一首 MV.

Finish What Ya Started

美女當然是大家注目焦點. 更美的是這群曾是愛玩野男孩的樂手們長大了, 在這首歌裡散發的是成熟輕鬆自在. 不再執著狂飆炫技, 只是快樂彈好聽的旋律.

Eddie 的吉他真是迷人極了. 我覺得這首歌是他們的傳世經典. 比起來其它的 Van Halen 作品像是另外一個好團做的不相干的歌曲.

看完後好感動. 一是本來就愛這首曲子的美和簡單, 一是為了兩位樂手的投入和陶醉. 算是補前一篇的不足.

Jacqueline (Live 1988)

好多種元素的組合讓 Dream Academy 在當年成為最閃亮的新人, 但終舊没能成為巨星. 主唱/吉他手 Nick Laird-Clowes 的聲音極為感人, 加上氣質美女學院派古典樂手 Kate St. John, 及另一位詞曲主力鍵盤手 Gilbert Gabriel, 標榜的是他們融合各種不同音樂元素的努力. 但是他們最讓人記得的是夢幻風的音樂及運用大量古典音色的編曲. 歌曲旋律及主唱射出的個人魅力是我最著迷的部份.

1985 年以一首 Life in a northern town 打開知名度, 首張同名專輯充滿了讓人動容的曲子. 第二張專輯 Rememberance days 成績平平, 第三張 A different kind of weather 更慘. 所以只好拆團分手了. 目前團員各自追求自己想要的音樂生活. Nick 原本與 David Gilmour 熟識, 後來跑去在 Pink Floyd 的 Division Bell 專輯裡貢獻了一些歌曲. 原來他的夢幻和老團飄渺的頻率是相通的!  Kate 和 Gilbert 也一直在樂界發展. 到今年都還有謠傳 Dream Academy 有重組的可能.

1985 年 MTV 的訪問

認識這個團有個幾十年了. 真的有.

出道時的 Siouxie Sue 野到不行. Love in a void 是那個年代的作品. 很難把她和後來的 Siouxie 連在一起.

嚴格說我不該算是她們的歌迷. 可是她們有幾首歌真是棒極了.

去過臺北新音樂節的人大概不多, 因為要夠老, 還要消息靈通才會注意到這個消息. 那年就在我的高中旁邊辦. 記得在裡頭一直放著當時不容易看見的, 主流唱片公司裡的一些非主流(好吧, 次主流可能比較對)的音樂錄影帶. 其中一首一再出現的曲子, 就是這首 Spellbound. Siouxie 勾魂的聲音, 配上有趣的編曲, 好聽.

後來終於買到在臺灣代理發行的 Siouxie & The Banshees 專輯. 是 Through the looking glass. 這是一張翻唱專輯. 我對她們自己的歌比較没有感覺, 但是她們的翻唱歌曲真是好聽. Strange fruit 唱得像要送葬般淒迷. Hall of Mirrors (這個連結只有音樂) 把所有起伏都壓在離地 30 公分以下, 冷酷而優雅.

最愛的一道是 Passenger. 城市的華麗被放入了這首 Iggy Pop 的老作品, 更突顯曲子裡的無力感.

第一次聽到這張錄音的方式你一定没聽說過. 那是在卡帶掌權, 西滴剛剛要竄起的時代, 也是剛剛有人開始認真引進另類音樂進入臺灣的年代. 事實上另類音樂好像就是那時候在水晶唱片的那一群先知們定下的中文名字. 有一天, 我到了水晶唱片公司, 看到這一張卡帶. 不是發行的代理版. 那(大概)是由 CD 轉錄的卡帶, 封面是這專輯封面的翻拍照片. 卡帶盒翻過來還有 “Promotion only, not for sale” 的字樣. 完全自家純手工盜版卡帶的模樣. 我到現在還很感念那時這批人的作為. 在没有代理没有進口, 資訊不發達的年代, 我然有這個福氣聽到這張專輯.

原來 Bauhaus 是德國的一所藝術/建築學院(1919-1933), 是德國現代主義的發源地. 這是大學時代某年到北美舘時的驚人發現.

怎麼有人會像 Peter Murphy唱歌那麼怪里怪氣, 可是我就是愛聽他的調調. Daniel Ash 吉他刺耳得很. Bass 和鼓點像地底爬上來的, 又黑又冷. 捨不得關掉它. 我成了 Bauhaus 的樂迷. 不只 Bauhaus, 拆團後的 Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, Love and Rocket 都很棒.

我好愛這一張! 

羅斯福路上曾有一間 pub 叫 Woodentops, 當年是不少地下團的聚集地. 我相信店老闆應該也是 Woodentops 的歌迷.

這個英國團印象上只出了三張專輯. 三張都很精彩. 他們主要使用原音樂器, 電吉他和電子琴也一切從簡. 就像當年水晶的文宣說的, 是"一群快樂的大孩子在唱快樂的歌". 年輕活力全晾在那給你看.

講到毛頭, 他們的歌可一點也不含糊. 編曲熱鬧飽滿, 旋律好聽又好記. 一首 Last time 讓我感動極了! 可惜悠管裡放的演唱會版太快了, 不如專輯版迷人.

這是他們 1977 在 England 的現場. Iggy 不知是醉了還是嗑藥了, 有些恍神. 音樂很棒. 這首曲子收錄在 1977 年的個人專輯 Lust for Life 中.

好悲的一首歌. 該拿去立法院塞進很多人的耳朵裡.

Iggy Pop, 和 David Bowie 同時期的教父級人物. 早期帶著 Stooges 以野蠻狂野的舞台表演得到廣大的支持, 專輯 Raw Power 名列百大必聽專輯裡. 四十年了吧! Iggy 爺爺還是那個樣子, 總是光著上身在舞臺上彈跳. 爽就唱, 不爽拉倒, 他在舞臺上下一秒會發生什麼事都不奇怪. 有人說, David Bowie 願意配合流行文化, 紅了, 一代天王. Iggy Pop 不乖, 一輩子留在地下. 也是教父, 拜的追隨者不一樣而己. 堅持他的搖滾, 他的硬漢風, 他的一嘴髒話不鳥你的態度.

這麼多年了, 我還是會每隔一陣子就想念起他的音樂.

因為有 Johnny 而受到注意, 因為音樂的表現而名留青史.

Johhnny Rotten 帶領 Sex Pistols 把西方樂壇搞得天翻地覆. 幹得好! 但是只有搞破壞這招也用不了多久. 風潮消退後. 新浪潮把聽眾們帶去華麗的電子世界. Johnny Rotten 也改了個名字, Johnny Lydon.

1986 年. Johnny 再次證明他是走在時代前端的. 這專輯叫做 Album, 發卡帶版叫 Cassette, 發 CD 叫 Compact Disc, 發錄影帶叫 Video. 專輯名稱搞噱頭, 內容更是不得了. 除了自己是樂壇老手外, 這張專輯的陣容還真是可觀: 先知級的 Bill Laswell 是製作人; Steve Vai 彈了不少嚇人的 solo (包括這首 rise); 貝斯手 Jonas Hellborg 是 大老 John McLaughlin 手下 The Mahavishnu Orchestra 的團員(聽聽 bassline 有多好聽!); 還有那個帶起搖滾王朝的大團 Cream 裡和 Eric Clapton 鼎立的鼓手 Ginger Baker. 這專輯在史上的重要性在於帶入大量民俗音樂元素, 而且用奇怪的方式和搖滾融合.

這首 rise 是經典作. 老實說是從 Johnny 口中出來的歌裡我最愛的一首. 四平八穩, 狂暴卻沉穩. 這真的是不容易達到的一種平衡. 還有, 你聽過那一首歌像這樣, 半首歌都是同一個音高整句唱到底, 還不會讓你無聊?

在我們光南看到這張. 不推對不起自己. 除了他, 大概找不到第二個人可以為了出一張專輯, 找來這麼多武林高手助陣.
                                                                               
Les Paul 爺爺兩年前過了九十大壽, 樂壇一群人幫他開了紀念演唱會, 錄了這張專輯. Les Paul 何許人也? 電吉他是這位爺爺第一個設計好交給吉他廠做的. 他一個突發奇想的發明改變了流行樂未來一甲子的風貌. 當年他設計的吉他 Les Paul Model 經過幾番演進, 變成電吉他的中流砥柱. 這款琴音色厚實強悍, 深受搖滾客的喜愛. 我自己也是 Les Paul 的信徒之一哪!
                                                                               
回來看看這專輯. 裡面的樂手真是了不得, 整張聽下來真是過癮極了!一群吉他大師輪流上場. 在同首歌裡可以有 Joss Stone 負責女聲, Sting 掌男聲, 怪物 Steve Lukather 彈吉他, Kenny Wayne Shephard 彈 slide guitar, 再加 Les Paul 自己下去變第三把. 下一位是 Eric Clapton, 再來是愛用Les Paul吉他的 Peter Frampton. 美國藍調吉他大老 ZZ Top 大將 Billy Gibbons 和 Santana / Journey  的老將 Neal Schon 都交了作業.  接著是後來棄 Les Paul 轉用 Stratocaster 的吉他巫師 Jeff Beck. 老人輪完, 換 Bon Jovi 的 Richie Sambora 掌下一首. 接下來出現藍調名將 Buddy Guy, 滾石的 Keith Richards, 以及 Rick Derringer 的三人組. Goo Goo Dolls 的 Johnny Rzeznik 也來湊熱鬧, 配上 Peter Frampton 和 Les Paul 自己的演出.
                                                                               
從小跟 Les Paul 學吉他的大老 Steve Miller 當然一定要出現, 還有一段 Steve Miller 五歲時跟 Les Paul 的對話錄音, Les 鼓勵小 Steve 要繼續唱歌, 結果 Steve 果然帶著吉他兼主唱帶著 Steve Miller Band 揚名立萬. 最後一首是 Joe Perry 和 Kenny Olsen 和 Les Paul 的合作演出.
                                                                               
光看陣容就不得了了. 這些人在一起, 可以開美國流行樂吉他史學了!
