The Taoist Priest Miscellanea of Pandanus 1 : Miss Na-dauMiscellanea of Pandanus - 2 : Bullet Miscellanea of Pandanus - 3 : Huqinabu-babuHeart RipperThunder and Lightning

Huqin is a kind of two-stringed bowed musical instruments. My granddad was a huqin player. Usually he made the huqin by himself. It’s amazing and interesting to watch him made a huqin out of a pandanus trunk.

(The Picture is quoted from "Anyway the wind blows")Well, I cannot pretend that the world is peaceful, and keep on talking about the pandanus. Yes, I know, I know….the ‘UK Terror Plot’ (five still at large), ‘The Middle East Crisis’. In Taiwan, our President Chen maybe forced to quit because of the public opinion toward his corruption and incompetent. There is a phrase in Chinese: The wind sweeping through the tower heralds a rising storm in the mountains. The storm is coming, I can feel that.OK, let’s talk about pandanus.

Miscellanea of Pandanus 1 : Miss Na-dau

Pandanus, we call it 'na-dau'. It looks almost the same with pineapple. I am more familiar with pandanus than pineapple because pandanus are common in the seashore around Taiwan. (It must spread all over the island long time ago, but mostly found in the seashore now.)There is a famous story related with pandanus in Taiwan. We usually call this story 'Miss Na-dau'.

babu-babu

25 years ago, in my hometown, Chupei, a desolate countryside in Taiwan, the ice cream man is very popular. He always rides a motor cycle with a big ice cream box. He rode slowly through the countryside with a peculiar horn sound: 'babu-babuba---bu'. When We children heard this musical horn sound, we became exciting and restless. When the ice cream man stopped under the cool shadow of big trees, we'd drop whatever in our hands, except the coins, and gathered around the motorcycle. Minutes later, every child hold an ice cream cone carefully, smilingly. We call the ice cream man 'babu-babu'.Now, the 'babu-babu' almost vanishes; though I still saw some babu-babus somewhere, the horn sounded, without children gathering around. The grew up children, who were once faithful customers of babu-babu, prefer the ice cream in McDonald, or Haagen-Dazs.The next generation maybe never heard of this musical sound:'babu-babuba---bu'.

Heart Ripper

This is a story I heard often when I was a child. It was told usually in the summer. They said there is a man always lingers on the solitary country roads. He is looking for the child walking alone. This evil man will use knockout drops. Or I should say ‘knockout powder’. The man sprays the powder over the child. Then the child is knocked out. He will bring the unconscious child back to his weird dark place. He puts the child on the operating table. He uses a knife to cut the child’s chest, takes out his heart to make the knockout powder. We call this evil man ‘Heart Ripper’. When my mom took a nap beside me in the bright summer afternoon, Heart Ripper was always recalled. I can see him linger around the straight solitary country road, which is not far away from my house. A black blurred figure in the glared sunshine. A knife sparkling. “Come on. Take a nap.” My mom said, “it’s so hot, don’t go out.”

Thunder and Lightning

Durning the dinner, it thundered and lightning. I told my grandma-in-law a story :Once upon a time, a very good daughter- in-law, who was a widow, lived with her parent-in-law. When they had dinner together, she always left the good food on the public plates and kept the bad food in her own private bowl."That's it!" My grandma-in-law interrupted me and showed her agreement. But the god Thunder mistook this daughter-in-law as a selfish woman. Thunder kill this dauter-in-law to punish her. Eventually, the Emperor of the Heaven found this was a mistake. So Emperor of the Heaven bestowed the title of "god Lightning" upon this daughter-in-law, who was in charge of making a sparkle before the god Thunder punish people, to let god Thunder see the people clearly."Have you ever heard of this story before, Grandma?""No, never.""Oh....I make up this story."Actually, I read this story on the popular "Taiwanese Folk Stories" when I was a child. But grandma-in-law is an illiterate.
