The Tale of Despereaux

The Tale of Despereaux  being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread

Written By Kate Dicamillo

This book seems like a traditional fairy tale, a hero on a quest to rescue a beautiful princess. Well, it is more than that. Reader, the happily-ever-after ending in this book did not make every character get what she or he wanted, which make the story more realistic.

I like the contrast between love and forgiveness, hope and loss, especially the part between light and dark. At the beginning of the story, Kate DiCamillo starts, The world is dark, and light is precious. Come closer, dear reader. You must trust me. I am telling you a story.” She ends Stories are light.”  The ups and downs in our life are like light and darkness. We can't avoid them but we can look on the bright side. Light comes after darkness and that makes life precious.

The Tale of Despereaux was written a novel for children, but it is for everyone. The book won the 2003 Newbery Medal and was adapted into an animated film in 2008.
