Henton’s Big Shoes--By Hueitze (Whittak)
Henton has many pairs of big shoes !
Henton is number 3, the middle kid among the five of us. When we were small, he was a mild mannered boy, but the funniest, and the most gifted of all. He was good in school, excellent in Chinese brush pen writing, water color, and most of all, he was a cartoonist. His cartoon has a satiric humor. When he was in Yuenlin high school, his cartoon was printed in the central daily news showing the automatic slaughter house and a butcher who is out of job with a title “put down your butcher’s knife, and you are an instant Budha.” He understood life more than any of us older brothers.

When he was in Yuenlin high school, his cartoon was printed in the central daily news showing the automatic slaughter house and a butcher who is out of job with a title “put down your butcher’s knife, and you are an instant Budha.” He understood life more than any of us older brothers.
Henton is two years younger than me. I left Yuenlin, 1964 for Taipei to study Physics, and then left Taiwan in 1969 for the US. Henton, Chuen-Chuen and Suzen were much younger, a lot of things happen in the family, there were happy times, and there were difficult times. I was hardly a participant in remote, as communication was so much slower and expensive and our resources were so limited. The shoes that I should have wore, one size bigger, for the family, Henton wore and help Fu-Min and Father shoulder the burden in time of difficulty.
Henton entered National Taiwan University Chemical Engineering just like that easy. He worked to support his schooling. After he graduated, he gave up the idea of going abroad because the family needed him. He married Kuei-Mei in 1973. My nephew Zuhan and niece Emma soon arrived.
In the several years that followed, our grandfather, our father left us and mother had depression. The caring needs and challenges of the family were numerous. I was not here, the shoes that I suppose to wear, he wore.
Since graduation in 1971 from Taita, he worked at the industry first, and then entered public service at the energy department. 1980, Henton finally got an opportunity with the Government grant to study at Yale and received Ph. D. in 1984 in Chemical Engineering. During that time, he studied in the US but the condition was that he will have to leave behind his wife and children. A very challenging arrangement, another big shoes, he wore.
After Yale, he returned to work in the energy department. We do not discuss work much, but with little that we could talk about, I can say he contributed tremendously in the first production of short half life isotopes for the medical application in Taiwan and perhaps in the neighboring countries. An ISO 9001 certification of the production process is a world class standard. Because of the nature of his work whenever there were earth quake, typhoon, he was the first to get to his lab to make sure every things was safe and sound. His small feet wore the big shoe again.
Henton was the most gifted among us. Some of us were good at sciences and engineering, but not much else; some of us were good at literature, but not much else. But Henton have both and more. He now wanted to be in Russia as a diplomat. As little as he could tell me, an American made in Taiwan, his adventure was amazing, and his achievement is even more amazing. He wore another big shoe again.
Henton, thank you for wearing the big shoes for me, the big shoes for the family, big shoes for the people, and the big shoes that walked the world and touched so many people. These big shoes are going to be the shoes that we will learn to wear, those of us brothers, sisters and all the people you touched.
I love you, proud of you, Henton!

*When we talk about having "big shoes to fill," we are remembering larger-than-life heroes and holding ourselves accountable to them.
