Booker Prize shortlist

今年（2006）英國布克獎的決選名單，已經在9/14出爐。

有趣的是，事前被看好的Andrew O’Hagan、Peter Carey、Nadine Gordimer、Nadine Gordimer和Jon McGregor，全都沒能入圍。

以下是2006年的布克獎決選名單：

※ THE INHERITANCE OF LOSS  by Kiran Desai

故事和一名退休的法官及其孫女、和僕人的兒子有關。評論家Kate Saunders說Desai的作品，poised, elegant and assured, and often breaks out into extraordinary beauty.

Grenvill曾以The Idea of Perfection獲得2001年的Orange Prize。

※ MOTHER’S MILK  by Edward St Aubyn

Edward St Aubyn在1990年代即出版過一描述Patrick Melrose一家的三部曲，。如今，Mother’s Milk和三部曲的濃縮版本Some Hope一起出版，提醒我們what we’ve been missing.

※ THE NIGHT WATCH   by Sarah Waters

Sarah Waters曾經獲得過Betty Trask and Somerset Maugham awards,並獲得布克獎和Orange Prize的提名。The Night Watch描述二戰時的女同性戀的私生活，不過，評論家Tim Teeman認為，It isn’t only about lesbian life, and where plot was central to the first three books now the focus is more on characters — and how they respond to desperate circumstances, filleting their motivations, fears and desires. It is an engrossing, bleak book about private conflict in wartime; the gritty reality belying the “Blitz spirit”.
