貓瞳，忽大忽小

親愛的YJ,

這次到山上去，一大部分的時間都在閱讀(因為沒有警察陪同，外國人哪也不能去)。一年前在曼谷機場買的孤獨星球系列孟加拉旅遊書，幾乎沒有翻過的，這次下定決心只帶本書出門，不三心二意就只能讀這本了(雖然第一天在博物館又買了兩本Chakma的書)。

花了一個上午，好好讀完孟加拉簡介及吉大港的部分，前言與作者寫書的感言，讓我微笑大笑還有警惕自己要收斂一點。例如，作者在Life on the road第一句就寫：Finding a simple piece of information in Bangladesh can easily turn into an epic quest. 我大笑，這是真的！像今天到達卡，搭火車，沒有看到任何時刻表，沒人告訴我幾時可以到達卡，於是三點開車，我已經習慣孟加拉了，完全沒有想到問時間，然後，晚上九點四十五分我自然到達達卡最後一個火車站。作者問：
Was it possible to anticipate how long it would take to find a train timetable in a country where everything happens at Allah’s will? 我可以回答作者，這完全看你有沒有有力的朋友，像Kazi這樣的人，一通電話可以直接到鐵路局經理的辦公室，三分鐘搞定！

而作者的感想讓我發出一陣陣到過孟國的人才懂得的大笑：
At time I felt like a contestant in some farcical subcontinental game show. There was a challenge: Gather information. There was an audience: everywhere. There was an obstacle: Bangladesh. And there was a prize: Bangladesh.

So, I am standing in a crowd of protestors and police in riot gear, asking direction to a cybercafé and wondering where the hell I am. Then I remember: I’m exactly where I want to be.

我完全可以想像初到孟國的旅行者(不像我們居留此地的外國人有本地人可以幫忙處理買車票訂旅館等雜事)是怎樣的搞不清楚狀況而曠日廢時才能辦好一丁點小事的窘況。看到這裡，如果你並不會氣惱，反而跟我一樣笑到掉出幾滴眼淚，兼有某種過來人點滴在心頭的絲絲不知如何形容是好的滋味，那恭喜你，你已經通過考驗登堂入室，獲頒Bangladesh這個Prize，可以在孟加拉長期居留啦！

另外，有一點讓我覺得慚愧的是，作者的孟加拉經驗提到，因為這個國家太少外國人了，也沒有甚麼觀光客，所以大家對外國人都很好奇，所以你必須要抵擋一些無可避免的好奇心與注視。這是表面現象，進一步想的話，她說：文化的互動不只是可能的，而且還是不可避免的！所以提醒所有旅行者：As a traveler you offer Bangladesh an insight into the rest of the world and an opportunity to give the rest of the world an insight into it…. Every exchange you have is significant. Each impression you leave will remain, and each impression you get will join with a thousand others and culminate in wonderment that the whole world isn’t talking about Bangladesh, where extraordinary kindnesses are ordinary occurrences.旅行者如此，長期居住此地的外國人不更是如此嗎?
