“Imagine Taiwan! Opening space for what it can be”. The first in a series of events took place on 17 December 2006, in Taipei, Taiwan, focusing on “What Can I/We Do To Take Responsibility For What Has Heart And Meaning For Me? This effort was initiated by open space technology practitioners who work for and serve other NPOs across Taiwan. The sponsors were CP Yen Foundation, Frontier Foundation, Facilitator’s Forum and ICA Taiwan.
Nearly 70 people (including 3 children) from all walks of life spent the whole day to exploring opportunities and challenges in what we can do to move toward our desired future. Seventeen topics were raised once the market was open, including:
* The truth about Taiwan
* How to shorten the distance between urban and rural; minimize the discrepancy between rich and poor如何拉近城鄕差距縮小貧富懸殊
* What positive cycle do we wish to activate? 思索在台灣我們該啟動什麼良性循環?
* Brainstorming: 100 reasons why Taiwan is beautiful100個台灣吸引人的理由
* How to assist foreigners in appreciating Taiwan Arts?
* Explore reasons that make you proud of Taiwan
* What kind of public art represents the spirit of Taiwan?
* What will you be doing 10 years from now? 有人到陽光下想像10年後的自己
* How to develop the forestry tourism in Taiwan?
* English environment for self-improvement and international friendship
* How to help high school students find their meaning in life? 如何幫助高中生找到他們人生的目標
* Expanding ”Imagine Taiwan” perspective to our organizations and communities
* Singing our own songs有人唱屬於我們的歌
* What values/concepts do we want to pass down to our children?
Seven action arenas were initiated at the end of the day. They are:
1. Promoting a “laughing, hugging” movement”, starting from you and me and expand it to family, community, society and the nation﹝
2. Appreciating the beauty in Taipei﹝
3. Using IT to elevate knowledge competency in rural areas and increase interaction between urban and rural areas.
4. Collecting garbage and cleaning up the mountain “movement ﹝淨山活動→撿垃圾比賽﹞
5. Activating “Imagine Taiwan” in other cities﹝
6. Creating regular space to explore, share and support each other’s dreams﹝
7. Using blogs and diaries to record personal uniqueness﹝
Throughout the day, there were people singing, intense and deep conversations, massage being given, small groups lying on the grass under the warm winter sunshine, daydreaming about a possible future, the 3 children came in and out freely…one lady led everyone in an exercise of heartfelt laughing. It was a day filled with positive energy and free spirit as people shared, learned, formed new relationships and exchanged ideas for what they can do to make a difference where they are.
I remember some of the reflections at the closing circle, “Before I came here, I felt powerless. What can we do for our future? I have now decide to start positive influences from myself", “We deserve a better future”, “Everyone had an opportunity to talk and be listened to. This is a miracle!”, “When I looked at the theme, so big, I didn’t know what we could talk about. However, we came out with 7 actions!”, ”I now know that I am not the only one loves Taiwan; I am not alone", "Never Stop imagining!”, ” I am not a pearl; I am the thread that strings all the pearls together".
Three of the action groups have shared their activities since then. The group on Expanding Imagine Taiwan around the island in 2007 has set up a blog site and is planning to collaborate with local groups to support events in central, south and eastern Taiwan. Anyone wanting to initiate or participate in other events in any way is encouraged to make contact through the blog.
Taiwan is a small island, yet rich in geographical, topographical, ecological, ethnic, cultural and political diversity. We often find it difficult to appreciate in the face of rapid global change, political /societal disturbances, chaos and confusion. This kind of event provides us space, time and a healing process for us to tap into our natural positive energy.
The next “Imagine Taiwan” event will be held in Taichuang, March 17th by CP Yen Foundation and Ming Dao Foundation. If you have the passion to generate the imagination and the conversation, you are most welcome to join us!
