White Painting

A short summary of 'Rauschenberg and Cage' from the book 'Varieties of Modernism' by Paul Wood, Yale:.Robert Rauschenberg, born in 1925, is a modern artist generally regarded as the harbinger of a full-blown postmodernist art. .During 1951-2, he produced a series of completely white canvases, devoid of brushmarks and any other gestural traces of the passage of the artist's hand because they were painted with a roller. . http://www.artnet.com/Magazine/reviews/robinson/robinson3-17-2.aspJohn Cage, 1912-1992, later put a statement to accompany this work:'No subject / No image / No taste / No objective / No beauty / No message / No talent / No technique (no why) / No idea / No intention / No art' For Cage, art should be:'an affirmation of life–not an attempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation, but simply to wake up to the very life we're living'. 'No value judgements are possible because nothing is better than anything else. Art should not be different from life, but an art within life.'Cage gave Rauschenberg the confidence to believe, as he later put it:'the way I was thinking was not crazy.' 'It is as if, by being so empty, the white painting could be filled with anything.'What Rauschenberg went on to do is: to refuse to differentiate between things that could and could not be art. As Cage said of it: 'It is a situation involving multiplicity.' Rauschenberg was conferred having been the first to achieve a 'postmodernist painting' later with his evolved 'combine paintings'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cagehttp://www.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/singular_forms/highlights_1a.html

Something to say about Modern Art

An interesting read: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Modern Art But Were Afraid To Ask by D. R. Peak, June 2002"The trouble with a classicist:He sees a tree, that's all he sees -- he paints a tree." — Lou Reed, The Trouble With Classicists So you say you're not a fan of modern art. You think that paint splattered canvasses should be tossed out with the trash, or that abstract is what you do with a sponge to decorate your bathroom walls. Pop Art is what clowns paint on balloons and dada is what you called your father when you were four years old. If that's you... Actually, the past hundred years or so of all popular culture is beyond your mental grasp and you should seriously consider hiding away in a commune or a cabin deep in the woods, away from civilization, with nothing but prints of Thomas Kinkade's nauseating landscapes to keep you company. Because modern art is really about modern humanity's struggle to overcome the artistic prisons of the past and you need to know that. Other things you need to know: Look both ways before you cross the street.Don't bother doing what dead men have already done unless you can beat them at their own game. The egg came first.* See the whole article here.

A quick note of words

Modernity – the key difference between modernity and life in the past lay in its ‘ephemeral’, ‘fugitive’ and ‘contingent’ aspects, based on Baudelaire’s descriptions. – a volcano under our feet, a profound sense of social alienation, living between the cogs of a huge machine, artificial and unidentifiable.Modernism – foregrounded the claim for art’s autonomy with respect to the wider modern condition. – not the result of technical incompetence, but an effect of the pursuit of aesthetic independence, which was itself art’s survival strategy for the modern world.Post- modernism – purports to ‘reread’ virtually every imaginable sector of human enquiry from politics to art, history to geography.– a meltdown of assumptions about social relations, psychic identities, the constitution of knowledge and the relationship of humankind to nature itself..Gerhard Richter (b.1932), Motorboot, 1965..

Ron Mueck

Ron Mueck's works ignite a very eerie feeling by leading people to watch the human beings between the true and false. For me, it's not a matter of the realism. It's more about the Existentialism. Don't they make you think of Kafka's The Metamorphosis or Camus's The Stranger? Something that we could only sense with our hearts before now can be seen in our eyes. How amazing and extraordinary! Try experience more through seeing these:Washington Post James Cohan Gallery 49th Venice Biennial Untitled (Boy), 1999, Mixed media, 490 x 490 x 250 cm

Matthew Barney

I’m now studying Matthew Barney – The Cremaster Cycle and don’t yet understand him very well, even though I have bought his DVD when I was in Paris. Some art critics said it is almost impossible to decode Matthew Barney’s works because he applies too many abstruse art forms and biological languages. However, Matthew’s dashing, flossy, bizarre and headlong individual world which is without any constraints can truly lead me to an unknown mental arena, which is extremely mysterious, another good sample to explain how contemporary art is more like an adventure than a visual art. Good to explore! *http://www.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/past_exhibitions/barney/*http://www.cremasterfanatic.com/index.html

Roaming around

Christopher Cheung's works are now hung in our gallery. An art critic about Cheung's works by Day-hsi Chin in 1994 is quite refined and touching:A TELLING TALE OF A MAN BORN INTO THE WRONG EXISTENCEI have a recurring dream: I am aboard a train, but only as it starts to move do I realize that it is going in the opposite direction of my intended destination. In that dream state, I did not have time to feel the tragedy of the situation nor to examine the reasons and experience remorse. All I felt was a sense of utter loss, and the fear of inevitably heading towards a boundless, indescribable terror which lurks in the vast darkness.First and foremost, this terror is strange and eerie. If I was the one who decided on my destination, and I who decided on the train to board, if these two contradictory and self-defeating choices originated from me, then the latter choice would have betrayed the former. This would be tragic indeed, It would also be a source of terror, but confined to one level within human proportions which would make it at least tolerable.

Round Sky & Square Ground

‘Round Sky & Square Ground’ is a tableware collection designed by Chen Jun-Liang. He just won the ‘Design for Asia Award 2004 (DFA)’ from Hong Kong Design Center. I admire his innovative ideas that break the concept of bases for traditional pottery. He turned ‘round’ to ‘square’. A simple idea made a design outdrawing. Now even the president caters his honored guests with Chen’s tableware. Cool.

A good article to share: 'Taiwan Red' in vogue Local designers and artists have adopted the 'traditional color' to help foster a Taiwanese identityhttp://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2005/12/01/2003282548By Ho Yi / Dec 01, 2005 / Published on TaipeiTimesThe first Taiwanese designers to show off a collection at Paris fashion week, Chien Yu-feng (簡鈺峰) and Shawn Pan (潘伯勳) went back to their cultural roots in search of inspiration for their ready-to-wear designs. During a trip back home last year, the duo were introduced to a traditional color tone that was often used in folk customs and they then applied it to their Autumn/Winter 2005 collection in Paris. The "Taiwan Red" series put the pair in the spotlight and gave them the opportunity of becoming the first Asians to design costumes for the Miss France beauty pageant this year. http://fashionweek.free.fr/PAPF_PE06/Shawnyi/index.html

Mr. Lee

Yesterday when my boss passed by our desks, he said ‘Guys. Keep going! I believe in our artists. They are really good!’ You know…this truly speaks to our hearts. As time went by, I felt myself more and more fond of this gallery, our two bosses and the artwork. I think I’ve made a good decision to join them. Yes, we have to keep going – move forward. One of our artists is Lee Ming-Tse. His painting ‘Mr. Lee’ made me laugh loudly. His works usually borrow the language from comic books and reflect a specific Taiwanese life philosophy. Wondering who bought it. I envy the guys who collect his works.Mr. Lee. 1993. 59x38cm. Acrylic on paperMany art critics that have reviewed Lee’s work, but I like the comments of J.J. Shih most. This is what he said:

Through the terror

I’ve spent a lot of time on an artist named Chieh-Jen Chen 陳界仁 these two days. Even though he is not an artist who I’m supposed to take care of at all. I've been building up a 'VIP Sales Kit' for his works. Anyway…while working for a small company like this, you’d got to be ready for anything that will hit right on your forehead for any reason at anytime. I’m stressed.

If you have ever read art history of the 20th century, you must know Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). He is commonly thought to be the most inspiring and influential person in moden art.

Keung Szeto, "Fall" - 1997 to 1998acrylic, lace, fabric burlap on linen, 25 x 34.25 inches (63.5 x 87 cm)

NEGEV , 1987, stone , 7 discss , dia. 280 cm, width 60 cm

Franko B ?

			Izima Kaoru: Tominaga Ai wears Prada, 2003拜讀Charlotte Cotton的' Gillian Wearing:I have been certified as mildly insane,1992-3......2. Philip-Lorca diCorcia: Eddie Anderson; 21 yrs old; Houston, 1990-92......3. Richard Misrach: Swamp and Pipeline, 1998....4. Wolfgang Tillmans:Still Life in New York, 2001.....5. Ryan McGinley ........6. Zwelethu Mthethwa: Untitled, 2003.......7. Joachim Schmid: Untitled...... .當代攝影藝術先驅William Eggleston (b. 1939)Stephen Shore (b. 1947)Bernd & Hilla Becher (b. 1931/1934)Seydou Keita (1921-2001)David Goldblatt (b. 1930)Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925-72).

Gilbert & George

Martin School of Art London
