Chinese American?
A funny Ph.D student posted an advertisement about an event, "2008 St Louis Chinese American Karaoke Talent Contest," on the website of the Taiwanese Graduate Student Association at Washington U in St. Louis.
That is too ironic, so I relied that "Is it reasonable to promote a Chinese activity in a Taiwanese student organization?" Then, he relied that the event was hosted by a immigrant group from Taiwan not from PRC.
That is too ridiculous. They said they were Chinese. Then, you told me that they were from Taiwan. Why do this group like to use such confusing language.

Dear Dean Prof. Gupta,
I got an offensive research invitation email from Mr. Kong, Dejun, a Ph.D student of your school. In his research, he incorrectly treats Taiwanese as Chinese. His act makes me feel very uncomfortable and hurts my personal dignity. So, I want to complain about his act.
Historically, the ascendants of part of Taiwanese were from the present China territory, but there have existed many native Taiwanese for hundreds of years in Taiwan. And, recently we have many new immigrants from southern Asia. So, the Chinese culture is diluted very much in Taiwan. Besides,
Japan once occupied Taiwan, so Taiwanese inherit Japan culture to some extent. Saying that the Taiwan culture is part of the Chinese culture is a misleading statement. We are a multi-cultural country in Asia. We have the Taiwanese culture per se.
You may image the situation is like that someone conducts a research about Britich people and he collects the data from UK and American. The mistake Mr. Kong makes is like treating American as having a style of culture from Britich. But, we certainly know that Americans' ascendants are not only from UK but also from other areas.
I know he may have some academic freedom, but I hope I will never receive such offensive email again.

Washington U Olin B School的把台灣人當中國人的研究!真幹!
Dear Taiwanese students:
I am a Chinese doctoral student who is currently studying in the business school of WashU. I am doing an academic research on how Chinese people (including Chinese from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Macao, etc.) adjust to the American culture. This research will help Chinese people better understand our cultural adjustment to a foreign culture. Since the research specifically focuses on Chinese people's cultural adjustment and people in this St. Louis Taiwanese community are very helpful to other Chinese, I do hope that you can kindly help me out by participating in this research.
The research participation requires completing an online emotion recognition test and an online questionnaire at each session every 6 months till fall 2009 (i.e., 3 sessions totally), and each session takes up to 20 minutes, depending on your pace. Once you participate in one session, you will be compensated $10 cash. (Since I am a student, I cannot afford to pay each subject more money). To emphasize, you can just participate in this research at any place with access to internet; no need to go to any lab. Also, your information or data will be absolutely kept confidential, and unidentifiable in publication.
However, there are three requirements for eligibility:
(1) You must be a Chinese from all the Chinese regions, including Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, etc.
(2) You have stayed in St. Louis for no more than 5 years (including 5 years).
(3) You are a graduate student or researcher, including a PhD student, a post-doc researcher, etc. of any major who works with at least one faculty member, or you are an employee of any organization.
