Writing Skills Topic Seven: Cause-and-Effect basic

Writing Skills Topic Seven: Cause-and-Effect basic

A. The purpose:
The purpose of the Cause-and-Effect writing skill is to explain why A happened or what are the results of A.

B. Four kinds of relationships
1. C --> E [S+V+O.] (C stands for “cause” while E stands for “effect.”)
2. C1, C2, and C3 (three that should be focused) lead to E, where this is shown in three ways:
(2.1) C1 --> E; C2 --> E; C3 --> E.
(2.2) C1 --> E; C2 +C3 --> E. (C1 is more important.)
(2.3) C1 + C2 --> E; C3 --> E. (C3 is more important.)

3. C leads to E1, E2, and E3 (three that should be focused), where this is expressed in three types:
(3.1) C --> E1; C --> E2; C --> E3.
(3.2) C --> E1; C --> E2 + E3. (E1 is more important.)
(3.3) C --> E1 + E2; C --> E3. (E3 is more important.)

4. C1 leads to E1 that then leads to C2. And C2 leads to E2 that leads to C3. And C3 leads to E3.
(4.1) C1 --> E1; C2 --> E2. (E1 --> C2.)
(4.2) A + V + O, which + V + O. In the [A + V + O], C1 --> E1 is implied while in the [which + V + O] C2 --> E2 is implied. And E1 leads to C2.
(4.3) combination of (4.1) and (4.2).
