你把我的搖滾樂怎麼了

故事當然是要從Breaks開始…話說Meat Katie、Lee Coombs與Elite Force三人的風格通常都被歸在此一類別之中。由於他們的名聲響亮，各自的作品也就被樂迷當作是認識Breaks的教材與範本，仔細聆聽並研究之。但Breaks近來頗有式微之感，連相關舞曲雜誌的版面比其他類型都相對小上許多，CSI決定出馬調查一下這是怎麼回事？最快的辦法便是把上述三人找來隔離問話(避免串供)。


劇情就是在這裡發生了重大轉折。 　　 (原刊登於Hinoter映象集)

第一個找來的是Meat Kaite。「Breaks are cool for a little while, then they’re not cool…」他有些不耐煩地複述之前他在接受洛城雜誌CityBeat訪問時所做出的表示。「A lot of breaks artists use a lot of dirty kicks to give it that rough sound, … I’m clinical. Keep it clean, strip it back to the bare bones. A lot of people think it’s quite house-y. I don’t care. I like house music.」

Meat Katie曾說很多人做Breaks是為了迴避House，而他此刻卻選擇公然展露自己真正的偏好。無疑令CSI探員十分吃驚。

第二號找來的是與Meat Katie多次合作的Elite Force，別名Shack，發跡於96年時的自創舞曲廠牌Fused and Bruised，曾奪得2003年International Breakbeat Awards的殊榮。他一坐下就立刻重申他先前透過澳洲inthemix網站說過的，「I’m tending towards the idea of ‘tech-funk’ rather than ‘breaks’ at the moment.」

CSI探員一起發出疑問句「Tech-Funk？」看來這是個線索。其中一人開始回頭翻找Meat Katie的筆錄及相關事證，發現早在2001年當Elite Force放下自己的廠牌Fused & Bruised專心為Meat Katie所創立的Whole9yard效力時，Whole9yard就被認定是個Tech-Funk廠牌。看來事發早有淵源。

Elite Force又提出他在inthemix網站的訪問中，對方要他簡單形容自己的網路廣播節目風格時的說法︰「It sums up everything I’m about musically; it’s a tech-funk manifesto that covers anything and everything from acid house to deep breaks & from booming electro to chunky funk.」似乎間接解釋著何謂Tech-Funk。

CSI探員亦逐漸察覺他們的話中皆透露出向House及Techno倒戈的氣味。但沒料到接下來這一段來自 ResidentAdvisor與Elite Force的訪談片段紮紮實實地證明了他們的想法「I'm a fan of rolling, organic-feeling productions that are laced with a techy vibe & built around a funky bedrock, so tech-funk seems to fit the bill. For the past couple of years there's been a real convergence within a certain style of breaks that's taken the sound further away from the hard & nasty nu-skool, and closer a house mindset, both in arrangements & in choice of sounds.」

幾乎不用再找人稱英國Breakbeat先鋒的Lee Coombs來詢問了，因為「人是誰殺的」答案已然呼之欲出。此時Elite Force忽然放起Lee Coombs和Meat Katie再次碰撞的〈Control〉，是首尖銳黑暗的Tech House作品，似是要為今日的問話畫下句點。

「最後一個問題，」CSI探員的表情簡直像是垂死掙扎「你們彼此到底有多熟？」

他們都沒回答，轉身就離開。是其中一人找出一張紀錄，上面寫著「Elite Force加入了有Meat Katie、Lee Coombs等碎拍大將坐鎮的Adrift Records…」

「Oh give me a break！」
