1987年對西洋流行樂壇而言真是一個男女對唱之年

還記得那時候

無論是動感的還是抒情的

總是有好多好多動聽的男女對唱

從1986年底Peter Catera跟Amy Grant合唱的"Next Time I Fall"開始

Aretha Franklin與Goerge Micheal的"I Knew You Were Waiting For Me"

Patti La Belle與Micheal McDonald的"On My Own"

Bill Medley與Jennifer Warnes為電影"Dirty Dance"(熱舞十七)所唱的"I've Had The Time Of My Life"

Dan Hill 與 Vonda Sheppard 的"Can't We Try"

到Starship動感熱情的"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"

幾乎每一首男女對唱都是銷售....排行與口碑的掛保證


但是那一年的男女對唱中總愛排個老將攜新秀

一來老將可以給新秀一劑定心丸

二來老將期盼有事業第二春的出現

三來新秀可以藉此打響知明度一砲而紅

四來更有個新秀對老將示以致敬的倫理意味

因此

在那一年

男女對唱有著相當重要的商業意圖與傾向


60年代紅極一時的白人靈魂樂女王Dusty Springfield自70年代以後

因為私生活問題而讓她與主流排行榜與銷售量上漸行漸遠

日漸沉溺與酒精與毒品的荒唐歲月中

80年代開始漸漸有所振作

這首歌讓她與當年英倫新浪潮樂風的偶像團體Pet Shop Boy一起合作

Pet Shop Boy用著平淡的聲調唱著自己的部份

不斷地唸著Rap:What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?

和Dusty Springfield那情感充沛具有爆發力的歌聲相映襯

構成了一冷一熱交錯的對比感受

成了她後期一首非常重要的作品


其實當年Pet Shop Boy錄製這首歌時原本的唱片公司預想到的人選不是Dusty Springfield

而是Tina Turner

不過唱片製作人堅持意屬Dusty Springfield才使得她有鹹魚翻身的機會

不過可惜的是當年這首歌發行時強敵環伺

在英國敗給了Rick Asley的"Never Gonna Give You Up"

在美國敗給了George Micheal的"Faith"

成了一首第二名單曲

不過記得一聽到前奏是廿多年前臺灣盛行一時的纖維飲料

叫做"法柏"(Fiber)的廣告片頭曲

印象還蠻深刻的


說到George Micheal當年為了轉型成實力派創作歌手

幾乎是同期與橫跨60至80年代的Soul Lady ---Aretha Franklin一起合唱

Aretha Franklin那渾厚有勁的嗓音極少有男性歌手能夠相配合唱的

George Micheal在這次合作上渾身解數使盡畢生所有的功力

恰如其分地與大姐大Aretha Franklin合作唱出這首節奏相當黑人的藍調歌曲

在1987年初各自在英，美兩地奪得排行榜冠軍

也成為該年度葛萊美獎最佳合唱組合的最高榮譽

不僅拉抬了Aretha Franklin自1985年以來一直在排行榜與銷售量的人氣與買氣

也使得George Micheal在日後轉型為實力派歌手開啟新的里程碑

其實這樣的行銷手法在國內也屢見不鮮

像是阿潘或是葉璦菱當年也有專門男女合唱的口水歌專輯發行

而且銷售量在當年是不差

只是這樣的質優的經典之作

才能經得起時間考驗還能為人所津津樂道
