歌曲中主角---一位歷盡滄桑的婦人

用著她懇切而卑微的請求與忠告

對著眼前那個充滿年華美貌一如當年自己的女子

訴說著她是如何地不顧一切

如何地放浪形骸

當一切繁華落盡，年華老去

她失去了平凡女子所擁有的小小樂園

所謂的天堂

不過是讓自己失去自我的鏡花水月罷了



在Charlene柔美的歌聲中如泣如訴地唱出一個女子的悔恨

也讓這首歌被視為反墮胎意識的歌曲

這首歌曲早在1977年時就已錄製好了

當時的反應卻極為冷淡

直到1982年時一位DJ廣播節目中放了這首歌

意外地獲得熱烈迴響

排行榜名次獲得前三名的佳績

才又讓這首歌再度被人討論起

也成了日後多部電影原聲帶的常客之一

最令人熟知的就是1994年的"沙漠妖姬"(The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of Deserts)



但是在國內

很早就有歌者翻唱這首歌曲

1978年黃鶯鶯和1980年的鄧麗君

甚至於1996年的李玟都唱過這首歌曲

無疑是相中她們跟原唱Charlene有著同樣輕柔甜美的聲音特質

而黃鶯鶯的版本在歌曲上與原曲做了些許的更動

除了少了間奏時那如泣如訴口白

歌詞部份翠了配合東南亞華人居多的保守民情

將I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free

改成I've spent my life exploring the inner feeling that costs too much to be free

"subtle whoring "實在是對當時的民風而言是過於直接而赤裸

這改變雖是花盡心思

但我認為歌曲的力度卻少了許多

實在可惜

但是以華人歌首重唱這首曲子的功力而言

黃鶯鶯在聲音的柔美與咬字清晰

還有歌曲情緒的掌控而言

算是相當成功的版本
