AP / Security agents in blue tracksuits are members of China's paramilitary police force, dispatched from Beijing with a mission to protect torchbearers.

BEIJING —  They wear bright blue tracksuits and Beijing Olympic organizers call them "flame attendants." But a military bearing hints at their true pedigree: paramilitary police sent by Beijing to guard the Olympic flame during its journey around the world.

Torchbearers have criticized the security detail for aggressive behavior, and a top London Olympics official simply called them "thugs."

Chinese police guarding the Olympic torch have been warned they face arrest if they lay their hands on protesters when the relay reaches Australia.
澳洲正式警告中國武警不得介入聖火傳遞，若他們把魔手伸向支持圖博的聲援人士將有可能會被逮捕。


The 'torch attendants' have been told they will have no responsibility for security and could commit an offence if they touch pro-Tibet demonstrators.
【火炬服務生(中國武警)】已經被澳洲當局告知，他們若抵達澳洲將無權負責維安，而且如果他們隨意接觸贊成西藏的遊行示威者將可能觸犯澳洲法律。


The decree follows criticism of the guards' heavy-handed tactics when campaigners caused chaos during the London, Paris and San Francisco stages of the global relay this month.
這個月在聖火傳遞於倫敦，巴黎和舊金山階段期間，這些中國武警粗魯蠻橫的引起混亂之後，遭到多方的批評。


Ted Quinlan, chairman of Canberra's relay task force, said: 'They won't have any power and, in fact, they could be subject to arrest if they laid a hand on somebody.'
