根據名作家鍾肇政先生同名小說《插天山之歌》改編而成。描寫二戰末期，日本加強內部彈壓，對台灣進行嚴密思想管制之際，知識份子所受的壓迫和抵抗。故事從一個原本已經擁有日本高等學位，抱著高遠的理想而回台的青年陸志鑲開始，在戰亂流離中逃亡、歷練、歸返原鄉的過程。影片展現大時代中小人物的生存意志和對理想的堅持、人性的細微層面和人文關懷。

鍾先生有感於日劇時期台灣同胞長期忍受異族無情的統治，寫出「台灣人三部曲」，「插天山之歌」就是「台灣人三部曲」的最後一部，呈現台灣人被殖民的悲哀以及奮鬥再生的希望。而在黃玉珊導演的影像世界裡，您將看到秀麗的山川、優秀的兒女，以及台灣人民在高壓統治下所發揮的生命潛能和鮮活的生命力，這種樸實無華的奮鬥精神，正是「臺灣精神」的有力展現。

故事簡介： 

      《插天山之歌》的時代背景為日據殖民時代末期，當時太平洋戰爭正激列進行中，故事從一個原本已經擁有日本高等學位、柔道高手的身份，抱著高遠的理想而回台的青年陸志鑲開始。主角原本計畫回來台灣組織民眾抗日，不料所乘船隻在途中遭擊落海，他與太平洋展開搏鬥。大難不死，卻因受日本特高追捕，逃到深山中，開始漫長而寂寞的旅程，從學習農事，如鋸木、拖木馬、釣香魚、鉤驢鰻來養活自己，而獲得農民、原住民高度的讚賞；也獲得象徵台灣母土、堅強的奔妹青睞，和其他人一樣在困境中爭取生存和自由，等待黎明的來臨。

The Song of Cha-Tian Mountain
This film is adapted from Chong Chaocheng’s novel of the same title, Song of Chatian Mountain. It depicts the intellectual tyranny of the occupiers at the end of the Second World War and the way that educated persons resisted it. The story begins with a Taiwanese man, Lu Chixiang, well educated in Japan and a judo master, who returns to Taiwan to live up to his high ideals. He plans to join an anti-Japanese organization on his return, but his ship is sunk on the voyage back and he must struggle with the ocean for his life. He survives, barely, but the Japanese police are after him, and he flees to the mountains. There he lives for a long time, leading a lonely life, wood-cutting, catching eels, and fishing to support himself. He wins the admiration of the local peasants and aboriginal people, and also the love of Benmei, a strongly maternal figure, who decides she wishes to become his wife. The entire film is shot in high-definition video, and it shows the more intimate side of human nature with great subtlety, emotionally understated but full of a humanistic spirit.
