The Fitting Room
Mella Jaarsma
Throughout the 25 years of her life in Indonesia, Mella Jaarsma’s artistic practice has become a microscope for examining the various aspects of a complex life.  The influences of the environment she lives in Yogyakarta – a place where aspects of modernity and tradition compete and mix in a unique way – contribute to making her works full of unexpected puzzles of meaning. Her works are always provocative and subversive – inviting viewers to rethink social stereotypes, such as those concerning religion, social class, communal identity, ethnicity, morality, tradition, political ideology, etc.

In her work, Mella Jaarsma believes in a symbiotic chain that is bound by history and a specific sociological environment. She believes that the associations attached to a symbol held by one group will never actually be totally applied by another group. This can be seen in the materials she uses for her installations, performance art, and objects, such as cloth for army uniforms, frog skins, cocoons, zippers, seaweed, dried squid, etc. Showing a crisscrossing visual approaches to art and fashion, Mella’s works use materials treated as “textual substances” that are not neutral because they already have social or cultural constructs.

The Fitting Room will be presented as a semi-retrospective exhibition focusing on Mella’s major works since 1993 until now that use the idioms of ‘cover’ — in their various appearance such as clothing, tent, house, veil, hijab, etc. — as a doorway to unveil the meaning of identity and its cultural contradictions.

Mella Jaarsma (born in the Netherlands, 1960), studied visual art at ‘Minerva’ Academy, Groningen, the Art Institute of Jakarta and at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Her works have been presented widely in exhibitions in Indonesia as well as in major international art events in Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Korea, Italy, U.S.A, Japan, The Netherlands, Iran, etc

This exhibition is supported by
Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Bandung; Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur; the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Jakarta; Philips, Jakarta.
