European Triangle

一段三角習題，
訴說著希臘古典鋼琴家Vassilis Tsabropoulos。
奧斯陸爵士大提琴手Arild Andersen。
以及英國即興鼓手John Marshall的相遇。
從雅典、倫敦一路回到奧斯陸，這是旅途的詩性，樂音的延伸。
穿梭在古典的優雅與爵士的即席間，旅行地圖成了一條直線。

當大提琴唯美的曲線從Arild Andersen滑落的指尖。
當澄淨的洗滌從Vassilis Tsabropoulos的黑白琴鍵翻越。
當摩登巧遇典雅從John Marshall的鼓點激起漣漪。

Arild Andersen，一九四五出生於挪威。
一九六四開始了他的大提琴與音樂旅程。
包括一九六七年的Jan Garbarek Trio、Terje Rypdal quartet。
Andersen臨近十年的音樂生命幾乎全投入於北歐古老民謠與文化的尋根。
一九九七年亦於ECM出版"Hyperborean"，記錄了一段北國極地歌謠。
一九七三至七四年間，Andersen也曾旅居紐約，與Sam Rivers、Sheila Jordan及Paul Bley等爵士樂手有過合作。
一九九六年Arild Andersen應Markus Stockhausen之邀遠赴希臘雅典演出。
他遇上了古典鋼琴家Vassilis Tsabropoulos，並對於Tsabropoulos的琴音與技巧情有獨鍾。

Vassilis Tsabropoulos，一九六六年出生於希臘雅典。
於雅典音樂學院畢業後，Tsabropoulos同時也進入巴黎古典音樂學院、Salzburg國際音樂學院深造。
主要研習貝多芬、莫扎特及舒曼等人的音樂作品，是一位正統古典音樂鋼琴詩。
二ＯＯ三年Tsabropoulos受ECM的邀約，出版個人唱片"Akroasis"。
主要以拜占庭聖詩與讚美詩歌為主軸，與德國大提琴手Anja Lechner合作。

John Marshall，一九四一年出生於英國Isleworth。
主要的音樂啟蒙來自於Charles Mingus，後投入摩登爵士音樂的演奏。
一九六九年Marshall成立了融合爵士與搖滾樂風的Nucleus樂團，並在七一年與Jack Bruce一同演出、灌錄唱片。
一九七二年他加入了迷幻樂團Soft Machine，最終變成樂團的音樂製作人。
John Marshall的演奏風格經常遊走於前衛與古典之間，是一位不易被定型的鼓手。

Arild Andersen始終認為，"The Triangle"音樂上的敏銳度是來自Vassilis Tsabropoulos的鋼琴。
並且是Tsabropoulos首次參與爵士唱片的錄音。
其次，Andersen也充份享受著John Marshall的獨特技巧，時常帶給他屬於不同的情境。

"The Triangle"的唱片中，Vassilis Tsabropoulos的鋼琴演奏變得吃重。
他試著透過輕巧而紮實的古典手法來詮釋爵士音樂，並能與Andersen的低音完全契合。
Arild Andersen並不獨是一位大提琴手，他的身份有時更貼近於唱片騎師。
他必須掌控、必須明白，必須製造氣氛，也必須與Tsabropoulos、Marshall溝通。
當三人處在同一平行線上，時而高低起伏的爭鳴變成美麗的即興，有著意外與某程度上的驚喜。
Vassilis Tsabropoulos也儘量避免高音的孤絕，"The Triangle"裡沒有獨角戲。

像Pavane那樣古典過門的優柔嬌飾，Vassilis Tsabropoulos變得十分輕盈。
Saturday的歡愉幾乎藏不住Andersen躍動的低音琴弦，Marshall的鼓點如是。
微婉的Choral，夜的神秘即席而生。
Simple Thoughts的質樸，是Andersen大提琴安逸的對照。
如果你迷戀那些浮光掠影，Prism寫實真摯。
Lines的活躍，享受著Vassilis Tsabropoulos的琴鍵曼妙舞蹈。
European Triangle猶如詩人吊鋼絲。

What a difference four years and touring time can make. The Triangle, the follow-up to 2000's sublime trio recording Achirana , shows a group that has grown in leaps and bounds, becoming something more, something larger.

Clearly Vassillis Tsaboropoulos, an established classical pianist whose first recording of improvised music was Achirana, has evolved. While the thrust of the trio remains in chamber jazz, his playing is more extroverted. “Straight” and the 5/4 piece “Saturday” demonstrate a new-found brightness, and expressionist approach; a far cry from his earlier, more inward-looking work. And bassist Arild Andersen and drummer John Marshall seem perfectly happy to join Tsaboropoulos in this more vivid space. Andersen�s “Lines” revolves around a rapid-fire theme that settles into the most swinging interplay of the programme, with Andersen walking hard and Marshall's listening skills on high alert, following Tsaboropoulos' rhythmic twists and turns with remarkable ease.by All About Jazz
