What We Know About the 2012 Volkswagen Up

There wasn't much doubt that Volkswagen's 2007 up! trio of small-car concepts would appear in driveways around the world. The only questions were when, which countries, and with what changes. Now we have some well-informed answers that give a pretty clear picture of these challengers to the much-ballyhooed Smart ForTwo and Toyota's upcoming iQ minicar. In brief, VW looks to be planning cheap-chic urban runabouts that promise low emissions, high mpg, and a perky persona recalling the air-cooled Beetle of old. Moreover, there's a good chance the Up will come to America, though it wasn't conceived with the U.S. as a top priority.

The 2012 Volkswagen Up reportedly starts production sometime in 2011, a year later than planned. The delay stems from a second-thoughts decision to remake the rear-engine/rear-drive concept into a front-engine/front-drive design. This change saves huge sums in development costs and tooling expenses--nearly $1.8 billion, according to Britain's CAR magazine--which is vital for a car aimed chiefly at emerging markets in Europe, South America, and India. Moving the powertrain from back to front also allows the Up to share more componentry and production facilities with larger VW cars, all of which are front-drive. No word yet on production locales, but Volkswagen can tap factories in several lower-wage countries to meet price points and a global sales target of a cool half-million units per year.

After a slew of leaks, Volkswagen has officials unveiled its Scirocco hatchback, which goes on sale in Europe later this summer. The car is on display this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

“In the Scirocco we will be bringing the kind of sports car into the showroom that people dream of. Yet it is a dream that an exceptionally large number of car drivers will be able to afford — despite all of the high-end technologies we have implemented,” CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn said.

With a length of 168 inches, the Scirocco is on par with the Golf. However, it is built significantly lower to the ground and is nearly as wide as the larger Passat sedan.

Honda Insight Hybrid

Honda officials here pitched Insight as a clever, handy, affordable small car that just happens to use hybrid technology for good fuel economy. It's a complete gas-electric hybrid system, not a so-called mild hybrid, but scaled down from the similar setup in the Civic hybrid (Test Drive, Jan. 9), so it doesn't perform as well.

Expect Insight to be rated 40 mpg city, 43 highway, 41 combined. Civic hybrid's rated 40/45/42.

It's hard to call 40 mpg disappointing, but in this case it is. The smaller, lighter Insight, using a smaller-displacement gasoline engine, seems to be an underachiever. Honda says that's partly because Insight's tuned for a little more punch, to make driving more fun, at the expense of fuel economy.

The BMW Clever concept, a €3.3 million (US$3.9 million) effort, is an enclosed two-seater that combines the safety of a microcar, and the maneuverability of a motorcycle, while being less polluting than other vehicles as it runs

Its strengthened frame will protect the driver in a crash and the vehicle will have a top speed of approximately 50 mph. The 230cc BMW engine—modified by Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) to use natural gas—produces 12.5 kW (17 hp) of power and maximum torque of 15.5 Nm at 6,300 rpm.

Fuel consumption is estimated to be 2.4 liters/100 km gasoline equivalent (98 mpg US), with 59.5 g/km of CO2 emissions. The compressed natural gas is stored in two removable gas bottles providing a range of 150 km (93 miles).

A problem with three-wheel vehicles with a symmetrical wheel layout is the tipping moment when cornering, which cannot be controlled at high speeds if the vehicle has a short wheelbase. To solve this problem the vehicle’s center of gravity can be moved towards the center of the corner—just as a motorcycle does when it corners.

Now we can finally shut up, because the L.A. auto show is hosting the debut of the G37 convertible.

From the A-pillar back, the G37 convertible features unique body panels, including a slick three-piece retractable hardtop that sandwiches under a flush tonneau cover. Inside, besides the extra sunshine, occupants will enjoy new convertible-exclusive “silk-finish” aluminum trim, as well as optional multi-adjustable sport seats and a Bose Open Air audio system with 13 speakers—including a couple in each headrest. Rear passengers, however, may not appreciate the compromised legroom and headroom… then again, they never had much of either in the first place.

The combination of a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four, six-speed manual, LSD and a practical hatch solidified its place in our hearts when it spent a week in the Autoblog Garage. While the aforementioned good stuff carries over to the redesigned 2010 model, any amount of stealth has been gobbled up by the new MPS' gaping maw.

Output is now rated at 256 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, and the new rear fascia with its Mazda6-inspired tail-lamps and darkened lower bumper looks great in person, but the Cheshire Cat grin and bulbous hood-scoop could give pause to buyers looking to fly below the radar while hunting WRXs and GTIs

TERRAFUGIA Transition

Terrafugia The Transition is the first real flying car On Road and in the Skies.. I was inspired by this and made a music video dedicated to the guys who made this project possible with the song Together in electric dreams by Philip Oakley and Giorgio Moroder. Terrafugia is a private company based in Woburn, Massachusetts that is developing The Transition, a roadable aircraft that the company describes as a Personal Air Vehicle.

The aircraft is designed to change configurations, enabling it to operate as a traditional road vehicle and as a general aviation airplane.The aero-auto hybrid will be designed to be capable of landing at an airport and then folding the wings in and becoming a roadable vehicle. Terrafugia was founded by graduates of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduates of the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Terrafugia was incorporated in 2006. The Transition "Personal Air Vehicle" is expected to be released in late 2009. The estimated purchase price is $194,000. Owners will drive the car from their garage to an airport, and then they will then be able to fly within a range of 100 to 500 miles. It will carry two people plus luggage and will operate on a single tank of regular unleaded gas. The Transition made its maiden flight on March 5th 2009. It lasted 37 seconds and covered 3000 feet of the runway at the Plattsburgh International Airport. The test pilot then proceeded to make 6 more takeoffs and landings.

The Kia Forte goes on sale in the US later this year as the replacement for the underwhelming Spectra. While our Forte will have a fourbanger, this Kia LPI Hybrid features a small electric motor and a Liquefied Petroleum Injected engine, capable of combining for 124 HP and 41 MPG US. The lithium polymer (li-poly) battery will be supplied by LG Chem, who is also supplying the same battery for the Chevy Volt.

VW BlueSport Concept

Volkswagen's Concept BlueSport should go a long way towards making the term "diesel performance" a household name. While it might seem to be an oxymoron to some, seeing it at the Detroit Auto Show, we can tell you that if it reaches production, everyone will be a believer. While officially just a concept for now (and the interior is a dead giveaway this isn't production-ready), the two-door roadster sports a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four mounted amidships. It puts out 180 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and pushes just 2,600 pounds via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Expect a 0-60 of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 140, all while returning about 35 mpg on the European cycle and upwards of 62 mpg in "Eco" mode.

The BlueSport might look a lot like an Audi TT with a Scirocco nose, but unlike its corporate sibling, the mid-engine layout provides a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution. It's also a tidy package at just over 13 feet in length, with a 96-inch wheelbase, a front track of 58.5 inches and a rear track of 60 inches. So it's about the same size as the TT, but in reverse. In person it seems much smaller than the Audi and reminds us of the Porsche Boxster more than anything, which isn't a bad thing. Stylist Walter da Silva explained his design inspiration in great detail for the assembled masses, unfortunately he did it in Italian, without subtitles, so we have no idea what he said. We did understand what Volkswagen Chairman Martin Winterkorn said, and that was that VW is officially committed to growth with cars that will continue to offer maximum excitement with minimum consumption, and the BlueSport is a perfect example of that philosophy. Rolls-Royce has officially announced it will unveil a near-production-ready concept sedan at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show next month. Called the 200EX — a name that recalls some of the British carmaker's early "experimental" prototypes — the luxuriously equipped four-door previews a new entry-level Rolls-Royce that will go on sale later this year.

Known until now by its internal working code RR4, the new Rolls-Royce is expected to be priced to compete against upmarket sedans such as the Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Holding firm to the strategy taken with its 100EX and 101EX concept cars — both of which have reached the showroom with little change, as the Phantom Drophead and Phantom Drophead Coupe, respectively — the 200EX is said to closely resemble the definitive production version of the RR4.

Showing plenty of the Gallic flair that Peugeot are renowned for, the design is said to appeal to those who were bored with the conventional format of a hatchback but didn’t want to upgrade to an ungainly sized MPV. Car manufacturers certainly cross segment boundaries now with car designs and the 308 SW certainly appeals to those that require practicality with a touch of design flair.

The 308 SW can be equipped with seven seats. Judging by the interior images, it would seem many hours of pleasure/frustration can me had folding and flipping the seats into a multitude of combinations.

Five petrol engines ranging from 95 to 175 bhp are available but the big seller in Europe will be the diesel engine options, of which there are three. The diesel engines range from 90 bhp to 136 bhp, two of which are fitted with a standard Diesel Particulate Filter. 5 speed manual, 6 speed manual or 4 speed automatic gearboxes can be optioned depending on which engine you choose.

The Audi R8 is a mid-engined sports car introduced by the German automaker Audi in 2006, appearing at auto shows and events all over the world. The R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, which contributes to the car's relatively light weight. It is built by Audi AG's wholly owned private subsidiary company, quattro GmbH.

Audi announced in 2005 that the name of the successful Audi R8 race car would be used for a new road car in 2007, the Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, appearing at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show. The R8 was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There is some confusion with the name, which the car shares with the Le Mans winning R8 LMP and also the 1989 Mk2 Rover 200, codenamed R8.

The R8 is used as a safety car in Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters racing series.

The first-generation BMW Z4 was known as the E85 in roadster form and E86 in coupé form. It was designed by Danish BMW-designer Anders Warming,[1] who later made the Mille Miglia Concept car with some of the same shapes as the Z4.

The Z4's design addresses many criticisms of the preceding Z3; the Z4 is larger, and has a significantly stiffer chassis. The Z4 features a strut type front suspension like its predecessor. The rear suspension, however is considerably different from that of the Z3, which was based on that of the E30 BMW 3 Series.

Instead of a semi-trailing arm suspension, the Z4 uses a more advanced multi-link suspension. It was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Initially, the Z4 was available only as a roadster, but in 2006 a coupé version was officially launched. The last of the first-generation Z4 to be assembled in North America rolled off the assembly line on 27 August 2008.

The big news, as evidenced by the name change from 350Z to 370Z, is the 3.7-liter V-6 now under the hood. The bigger engine, which produces 332 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, will power a new Z that is about 90 pounds lighter than the one it replaces—a perfect recipe for fun. Icing on the cake are two new transmission options: a six-speed manual with an optional rev-matching feature that automatically blips the throttle on downshifts, and a seven-speed automatic—the same unit that was recently introduced on Infiniti’s G37.

The new Z is visibly wider—by 1.1 inches—than the car it replaces, with increased front and rear tracks. It is 2.7 inches shorter overall, with a wheelbase abbreviated by 3.4 inches. Its design incorporates the now-familiar Nissan boomerang-style headlights and taillights, as well as Z-branded side marker lights. The cantilevered roofline is borrowed from big brother GT-R. Weight distribution of 54/46 front/rear has been maintained from the 350Z, and a new double-wishbone front suspension design is complimented by a lighter and stiffer four-link rear. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, with 19-inchers available as part of a Sport package.

Dubbed the Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster, Lamborghini’s latest creation promises SV-like performance but with the added pleasure of the wind in your hair. As the name implies, the limited edition Roadster will use the same 6.5L V12 found in the Reventon, pumping out 650 horsepower.

With power going to all four wheels, the Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster will be able to scoot from 0-60 in just under 3.4 seconds, on its way to a toupee-shredding top speed of 205 mph.

To set the model apart from lesser Murcielago Roadster, the LP650-4 will be done up in a flat gray with orange accents. That color scheme continues on the interior, mixing with Alcantara and carbon fiber accents.

No official word on when we will see the LP650-4 Roadster in person, but a New York reveal seems likely. Expect the new Roadster to list from $380,000 when it hits the market.

The Mazda CX-7 gets a new look and a new 161-horseower 2.5-liter engine for 2010 — the same power plant as in the 2009 Mazda 6 and the 2010 Mazda 3. The engine is coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. A carryover engine is a 16-valve turbo-4 that makes 244 hp.

The 2010 Mazda CX-7 gets revised front and rear appearance, with a new five-point grille that gives it a family resemblance to the new RX-8, MX-5 and Mazda 3. Improvements were made to the body to improve rigidity and ride quality. Inside, there are redesigned gauges with 3D dials and blackout meters, a multi-information display on top of the instrument panel and Bluetooth compatibility.

Pricing and complete specifications will be released closer to the CX-7's on-sale date.
