What We Know About the 2012 Volkswagen Up


There wasn't much doubt that Volkswagen's 2007 up! trio of small-car concepts would appear in driveways around the world. The only questions were when, which countries, and with what changes. Now we have some well-informed answers that give a pretty clear picture of these challengers to the much-ballyhooed Smart ForTwo and Toyota's upcoming iQ minicar. In brief, VW looks to be planning cheap-chic urban runabouts that promise low emissions, high mpg, and a perky persona recalling the air-cooled Beetle of old. Moreover, there's a good chance the Up will come to America, though it wasn't conceived with the U.S. as a top priority.


The 2012 Volkswagen Up reportedly starts production sometime in 2011, a year later than planned. The delay stems from a second-thoughts decision to remake the rear-engine/rear-drive concept into a front-engine/front-drive design. This change saves huge sums in development costs and tooling expenses--nearly $1.8 billion, according to Britain's CAR magazine--which is vital for a car aimed chiefly at emerging markets in Europe, South America, and India. Moving the powertrain from back to front also allows the Up to share more componentry and production facilities with larger VW cars, all of which are front-drive. No word yet on production locales, but Volkswagen can tap factories in several lower-wage countries to meet price points and a global sales target of a cool half-million units per year.

As the only Lotus dealer in Scotland was in far-off Edinburgh, reliability was vital and expected. Years ago, Lotus reliability would have been hoped for rather than expected and jokers said at the time that the name stood for "Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious".

But things have changed and the new Evora, with its smooth, 3.5-litre V6 Toyota engine, is the most rigorously tested Lotus model ever, checked out from the Arctic to the Australian desert, from the Alps to Norwich High Street. It even has a three-year/60,000-mile warranty.

After a slew of leaks, Volkswagen has officials unveiled its Scirocco hatchback, which goes on sale in Europe later this summer. The car is on display this week at the Geneva Motor Show.


“In the Scirocco we will be bringing the kind of sports car into the showroom that people dream of. Yet it is a dream that an exceptionally large number of car drivers will be able to afford — despite all of the high-end technologies we have implemented,” CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn said.


With a length of 168 inches, the Scirocco is on par with the Golf. However, it is built significantly lower to the ground and is nearly as wide as the larger Passat sedan.

Honda officials here pitched Insight as a clever, handy, affordable small car that just happens to use hybrid technology for good fuel economy. It's a complete gas-electric hybrid system, not a so-called mild hybrid, but scaled down from the similar setup in the Civic hybrid (Test Drive, Jan. 9), so it doesn't perform as well.


Expect Insight to be rated 40 mpg city, 43 highway, 41 combined. Civic hybrid's rated 40/45/42.

It's hard to call 40 mpg disappointing, but in this case it is. The smaller, lighter Insight, using a smaller-displacement gasoline engine, seems to be an underachiever. Honda says that's partly because Insight's tuned for a little more punch, to make driving more fun, at the expense of fuel economy.

The BMW Clever concept, a €3.3 million (US$3.9 million) effort, is an enclosed two-seater that combines the safety of a microcar, and the maneuverability of a motorcycle, while being less polluting than other vehicles as it runs


Its strengthened frame will protect the driver in a crash and the vehicle will have a top speed of approximately 50 mph. The 230cc BMW engine—modified by Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) to use natural gas—produces 12.5 kW (17 hp) of power and maximum torque of 15.5 Nm at 6,300 rpm.


Fuel consumption is estimated to be 2.4 liters/100 km gasoline equivalent (98 mpg US), with 59.5 g/km of CO2 emissions. The compressed natural gas is stored in two removable gas bottles providing a range of 150 km (93 miles).

A problem with three-wheel vehicles with a symmetrical wheel layout is the tipping moment when cornering, which cannot be controlled at high speeds if the vehicle has a short wheelbase. To solve this problem the vehicle’s center of gravity can be moved towards the center of the corner—just as a motorcycle does when it corners.

We’ve been whining for years about Infiniti’s unwillingness to give us a convertible version of its saucy G coupe, especially because Nissan builds an open-top version of the coupe’s platform-mate, the Z. Now we can finally shut up, because the L.A. auto show is hosting the debut of the G37 convertible.


From the A-pillar back, the G37 convertible features unique body panels, including a slick three-piece retractable hardtop that sandwiches under a flush tonneau cover. Inside, besides the extra sunshine, occupants will enjoy new convertible-exclusive “silk-finish” aluminum trim, as well as optional multi-adjustable sport seats and a Bose Open Air audio system with 13 speakers—including a couple in each headrest. Rear passengers, however, may not appreciate the compromised legroom and headroom… then again, they never had much of either in the first place.

Spyker C8 Aileron


The new C8 continues Spyker's signature architecture as first seen in the original C8 Spyder in 2000, with a midengine configuration in an aluminum space frame including aluminum bodywork. Without adding any weight, and with a stretched wheelbase, the car's torsional rigidity was improved by 40 percent, and cockpit space was increased.


In its design, the new C8 Aileron marks a new chapter in the company's history. Spyker still hews to the aviation-inspired design, but in the new model, a reduced amount of chrome and polished parts plus redesigned airflow around the car give it a more grown-up and cleaner appearance.
