I want to thank you for your words and comfort to my people, and your planned visit to Taiwan. I also want to assure you of my greatest support and respect to your country and your people during this critical period. I hope my people in Southern Taiwan will be eased by your wisdom and consolation. Moreover, I am writing this letter to urge you to pay attention to the jeopardized human rights condition in Taiwan, especially things happened to your old friend, our former president, Mr. Chen Shui-bian. He has been in jail for over nine months without a legitimized reason. The trial against Mr. Chen Shui-bian has been proven to be unjust and unconstitutional by many outstanding law school professors and experts around the world.
Not having a solid piece of evidence, the prosecutors are making up excuses to imprison Mr. Chen and deprive him of basic human rights before the public trial. It is, therefore, extremely important that his case should be seen and mentioned by you in public. This is of concern not only to me personally and to Mr. Chen alone, but also to the people of Taiwan. I appeal, hence, to Your Holiness for your concern in extending your generosity and care to Taiwan's jeopardized human rights situation. This will be greatly appreciated by my people and would help your old friend to be treated fairly and legally.
I will continue to support you, your mission and Tibetans everywhere. I hope your people can live freely according to your traditional religion beliefs and the government of People's Republic of China can admire what you have done and what you stand for. I wholeheartedly welcome you to visit Taiwan this time and at any time.
