read (察覺) between the lines 【解讀弦外之音】
根據CNN互動英語 April, 2006的註解 

read betwen the lines是源自密碼學中
一種最簡單的通訊密碼，
也就是以跳行方式將真正的資訊隱藏在書信中，
收信人必須從整篇文字裡找出規律，重新連貫閱讀順序，
才能看出信的內容。

從語詞的來源了解意思有趣多了，也容易多了。
