spell的用法

今天看到一個句子中有個片語：
"to spell the parents in their duties"，
到底片語中spell的含意為何？

這個spell的字義和我們常看到spell當「拼字」的用法是很不一樣。
It means "to do someone's work for a short time, so that they can rest."
(暫時替代別人的工作，以讓別人稍事休息。)  

簡單的字，不一樣的用法，讓閱讀更添趣味。
