Nanotechnology (奈米科技)

康軒國中英語第六冊有一課介紹nanotechnology
正是語言學習融入科技資訊的好例子。
最近在Reader's Digest May, 2006
看了一篇
"The Wonderful World of (small) 
正是介紹nanotechnology，
挺有趣的。


Nano的字源：
Nano comes from the Greek word for dwarf.
Nanotechnology的定義：
the study and manipulation of matter smaller than 100 nanometers--
that's the scale of things like molecules and viruses.

到底是多小？

文章中提到一個比喻:
If everyone in Manila were a nanometer
wide, the entire population, standing shoulder to shoulder, would fit on your thumbnail.
哇！真小！
不過仍要查一查Manila的人口才行。

Nanoworld的世界裡
老舊的規則是無法適用的.
文章指出
"Small things behave differently".
正因為如此才會有
「無限的創意和發明空間」！
例如：
1. self-cleaning toilet bowls.
2. Nanotechnology makes golf balls fly
straight by slowing down their spin.
3 windows that need no washing!
(來自於lotus leaves的靈感)
應用Nanotechnology於生活，生活更便利，
Nanotechnology創造了不可思議的空間.

1 nm (nanometer，奈米，即毫微米) = 10的負九次方meter（十億分之一米），相當於頭髮直徑的十萬分之一。

蓮花 (lotus) 和奈米現象有何相關性？
　蓮花出淤泥而不染，具有自我潔淨的能力，「蓮花效應」（lotus effect）是指由於荷葉由於表面的奈米結構 (nanostructure)，因而具有抗水防塵的自潔 (self-cleaning) 功能，這個特性能用來改善高科技的戰機雷達天線罩，也可以運用來生產自潔玻璃及奈米馬桶等民生用品。
　　奈米科技有如仙女棒一樣，對未來世界會有舉足輕重的影響。奈米「小而美」的世界值得我們探究。
