Notes: subtitled Special Preview plus Q&A Nick Broomfield at RENOIR CINEMA Tuesday 9 January, 6.30pm Documentarist Broomfield's second fiction feature is amongst the most poignant and impressive work of his long career. Imbued with his longstanding interest in human rights issues, the film is a dramatised account of the events leading up to February 2004, when 23 Chinese workers lost their lives after being cut off by the tide while picking cockles in Morecambe Bay. The film, which directly addresses the circumstances that put these workers in a position where they risked their lives for pennies, was only made after exhaustive research (including visits to the province in China where many of the workers originated). Broomfield largely cast non-actors whose migration experiences mirrored those of their characters. An authentic, vital and timely work, GHOSTS bristles with Broomfield's trademark conviction.
