【夏日傳說15】謎一般的民謠
大家應該都有聽過這首歌吧。

這首歌在70年代由被Simon&Garfunkel唱紅，近年又因莎拉布萊曼翻唱而再度風靡全球。我現在來解釋一下這首歌曲。
Scarborough Fair原本是一首古英格蘭民謠，背景是英國東南York郡北方的Scarborough這個濱海小鎮的市集。Fair可以是市集，也可以是美女的意思，在這邊是雙關語。歌詞說，

爾後的每一段歌詞，都要情人去做一件不可能完成的任務。比如說，用亞麻做一件衣服，可是不可以用針線以及縫紉；這件衣服要用一口井的井水洗滌，但是這口井是沒有雨水也沒有湧泉的；幫我找一塊地，這塊地是要在海水(鹹水)與岸上之間...好幾個任務。
由於歌詞這樣發展，四種香草又都有愛情的不同象徵意義，所以網路上都說，這是情歌，是情人以艱難任務來考驗對方的愛情。
其實這些歌詞有很有更深沉的象徵意義。這些任務，代表著死亡。亞麻做的衣服是裹屍布，才會沒有針織與縫紉；在鹹水與岸上之間的土地就是地底；而屍衣在地底自然會濕潤。其他幾段的歌詞象徵我就忘記了，撥種那個好像是整理墓地的意思，石南花則是掃墓會獻上的植物。四種香草除了是掃墓偶而會獻祭的植物外，也各自有忠誠愛情與綿長思念的意思。
Scarborough是個漁村，因此可能是男主角已出船遠行，或是征戰在外，了解自己不會活著回鄉，所以要託人告訴在岸上的姑娘這個口信。
因為有這樣離別與死亡的意涵，所以Paul Simon在1966年擷取其中幾段，再加上幾句新詞，重新將這首歌詮釋成反越戰的歌曲，取名為Scarborough Fair/Canticle。[本版歌詞]他用很簡短的新詞描述軍人四處奔波的心情以及戰爭的冷酷，並且試圖分段與舊詞呼應。Paul Simon想要以這首歌點出，戰爭帶走許多年輕生命。
Paul Simon版本的吉他編排超棒。我每次聽到吉他前奏耳朵就豎起來。
後來，有幸在高中合唱團館藏中聽到國王歌手合唱團演唱「完整版」的古民謠，我才知道這首歌是民謠改編，後來就到處找資料，才了解背後的故事。不過我忘記我是在哪邊看到「死亡」版的故事，反而現在在網路上都不是這樣解釋。然後，我再去找國王歌手錄製的Scarborough Fair版本，只找到Paul Simon版，找不到古民謠版本了

這個海邊的小鎮還挺多民宿的,
夏天應該遊人不少,
火車站與市中心是在半山腰上,
所以圖中看到的道路就在石璧上,
高高地看著北海還是挺覺得自己渺小的.
