Vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is not forbidden in the Quran, said believer Mahaya
I was thrilled to meet many beautiful faces and felt awe to have a chance to shot some vivid video clips of wildlife 2 weeks ago in Medan during a Veg Congress hosted by Indonesian Vegetarian Society . Here is my one memo of inspiring comments of Mahaya, one of the beautiful faces, on Muslim w/ vegetarianism:

As a sincere believer of Islam, Mahaya finds a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is not forbidden in the Koran and is in keeping with Prophet Muhammad’s teaching, which emphasizes being kind to all creatures and not eating anything that will harm your well being.

As of Festival of Qurban, Mahaya dates back to Prophet Abraham:

The Festival of Qurban or sacrifice dates back to the days of Prophet Abraham in the Arabian peninsular . It is an Islamic tradition that symbolizes the act of sacrifice which Abraham performed when God asked him to sacrifice his son to show total obedience and love for God.

In the context of the history during that time when people were nomads their animals were highly prized possessions so to sacrifice an animal was indeed a great sacrifice.

Fast-forward to today. Before the Qurban the animals were bought and shipped from other countries often in cramped and cruel conditions . This is totally unacceptable . The animals are 'sacrificed ' on the designated day and their meat is distributed to the community.

However , these animals have been raised in a most unhealthy manner . They are fed denatured food laced with antibiotics , hormones , other chemicals and were denied a free normal life . Under such conditions , their meat is not healthy for consumption.

“I think gradually more and more Muslims will realize this and make a change. But as with all traditions it will take time to change.” said believer Mahaya.
