		<![CDATA[American Idol類型的競賽方式在世界各地開花，本影片作者研究阿富汗(Afghanistan)的Afghan Star歌唱競賽跟阿拉伯聯合大公國(the United Arab Emirates)的Million's Poet節目。<br /><br />這類型節目的特色是人人均可參加(everyone has equal access)以及由SMS投票選出贏家(Winners will be selected via SMS voting).<br /><br />對於不可拋頭露面的阿拉伯婦女造成怎樣的影響呢？起先，參賽婦女的朋友反對說：you are leaving us for demogcracy. 當這個婦女贏了之後，這些朋友鼓勵她 (got behind her). <br /><br />那這些地區有美國化？並沒有，因為在這個比賽的format上，比賽的內容是傳統文化，所以反而蘇活了傳統文化，像傳統服飾、音樂、詩等等。 <br /><br />Now you'd think that &quot;American Idol&quot; would introduce<u> a measure of</u> Americanization. But actually, just the opposite is happening. By using this engaging popular format for traditional, local culture, it actually, in the Gulf, is precipitating a revival of interest in Nabati poetry, also in traditional dress and dance and music. And for Afghanistan where the Taliban banned music for many years, it is reintroducing their traditional music. They don't sing pop songs, they sing Afghan music.
