以前小時候美術課，用圖案裝飾一個中文字，英文也有，這個叫typography，但是這個英文字可以泛指一些將文字當圖案使用的方式。

Mr. ANDY BOWERS (Journalist, Slate): They use a special two-page form. For the last 90 years, the International Committee of the Red Cross has hand-delivered messages to hostages, detainees, and those in war zones. On the front of the forms first page, senders fill out details about themselves and the recipient. On the back, they write out a personal message by hand, so the hostage knows it's really from his family. There's enough space for about 300 words if you write very small.

A second blank page is attached by a perforated line. It's for a handwritten reply from the captive, which also serves as proof of delivery. Hostages can detach and keep the original letters and some have emerged from captivity with a treasured stack of Red Cross page ones. The form is never sealed in an envelope since captors will review it for hidden messages. Only family and/or private news is allowed.

The Red Cross tries to deliver these messages using its carefully cultivated network of contacts. The organization knows people inside nearly every insurgency and terrorist group. For example, a senior official in Geneva might get a high-ranking member of the Taliban on the phone and work out a delivery route for the message.

That when he sang a song at the ripe old age of 8, he could make you feel like an experienced adult was squeezing your heart with his words. ... "He performed in soccer stadiums around the world, he sold hundreds of millions of records, he dined with prime ministers and presidents. Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him, he seemed otherworldly, but he was also a human being. Like most performers, he was shy and plagued with insecurities. "I can't say we were great friends, but in 1991 I decided I wanted to get to know him better. I asked him out to dinner: I said, 'My treat, I'll drive, just you and me.' He agreed and showed up to my house without any bodyguards. We drove to the restaurant in my car. It was dark out, but he was still wearing sunglasses. I said, 'Michael, I feel like I'm talking to a limousine, do you think you could take off those glasses so I could see your eyes?' He paused for a moment, then he tossed the glasses out the window, looked at me with a wink and a smile and said, 'Can you see me now, is that better?' "In that moment, I could see both his vulnerability and his charm. The rest of the dinner, I was hell-bent on getting him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words, things he never seemed to allow himself to do.

Later, we went back to my house to watch a movie and we sat on the couch like two kids, and somewhere in the middle of the film, his hand snuck over and held mine. It felt like he was looking for a friend more than a romance and I was happy to oblige him. And in that moment he didn't feel like a superstar, he felt like a human being. We went out a few more times together and then for one reason or another we fell out of touch.

Then, the witch hunt began and it seemed like one negative story after the other was coming out about Michael. I felt his pain. I know what it's like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world has turned against you. I know what it's like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud that you are convinced your voice can never be heard. "But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight. When I first heard that Michael had died I was in London, days away from the opening of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same venue as me a week later. All I could think about in that moment was that I had abandoned him. That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificent creature that once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all busy passing judgment. Most of us had turned our backs on him.

"In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the Internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and onstage and I thought, 'My God, he was so unique, so original, so rare. And there will never be anyone like him again.'

He was a king. But he was also a human being and alas, we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive note and say that my sons, age 9 and 4, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. There's a whole lot of crotch-grabbing and moonwalking going on in my house, and it seems like a whole new generation of kids has discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever Michael is right now, he is smiling about this.

optional extra：這個詞組字很簡單，但是我不懂意思，他跟我講了典故，令人開悟。

Well an "optional extra" is a term that I think was oringinally used for buying and selling cars. An optional extra would be something that you would pay extra money for to get added to a car. For example, heated leather seats, a better cd player, navagation system, or satalite radio. These are extra options you can purchase.

In the paragraph below, they are saying that most people become emotionally attached to their cars. They are saying that it's not usually an option that you become emotional, but more of a certain thing. They use the term "optional extra" because they are talking about cars and like I said before it's a term that is often used with cars.

However many MPGs your car gets, or what quality ratings it receives, cars, like most products and services (perhaps even more so), have a large emotional component that isn't an optional extra.

modern occurence 對於現在正在發生的改變，可以用此詞組。
a modern occurence is simply something that has happend in modern times. You might say that facebook is a modern occurence.   • I wasn’t too happy to see some “inside sources” quoting my "all-hands" comments to the outside press–STOP IT! And while we’re on the subject of all-hands, I cancelled the regularly scheduled after-earnings meeting simply because it’s just too close to the one we just had. Don’t take it as something it’s not.
    • "all-hands meeting" is a name for a meeting in which every staff member attends 也就是老闆召開的員工大會。all-hands我記得典故是船長叫水手上船，喊all-hands。另外美國有一本海軍雜誌也是叫 All Hands。(感謝在美國的Andy的幫忙)
  • If Jerry Yang was a lower-caps CEO–literally, since he pens staff memos using all lowercase letters–Bartz appears to be his ALL CAPS successor, a sacred cow-slaughtering, no-BS strategist.
    • in email etiquette, ALL CAPS is equivalent to shouting. lower caps would then be someone who is very gentle and mellow. 就字面意思lower caps是小寫字體，大寫字體是ALL CAPS。但是在email禮節中，ALL CAPS指喊叫，而lower caps指溫和的態度。此句是說楊先生個性太溫和。(感謝在美國的Andy的幫忙)
  • the peanut butter manifesto: a four-page call to arms from a senior executive of Yahoo Inc., declaring that the Internet company is spreading itself too thin and must define priorities and radically reorganize its management structure.
    這個「花生醬宣言」，是指像塗花生醬於土司那樣薄薄一層，資源被分散於很多地方使用。這個本來是過去Yahoo!資深主管寫的四頁內部文件，但是被美國報紙在網路上登了出來。
    • a "call to arms", while being a phrase or figure of speech, is actually quite literal. it is a "call" or command to "arms", weapons. it is a call to war, or in its less literal meaning, a call to action or some sort, not always violent.
