EMI Classics相當榮幸能夠發行阿格麗希與克萊曼兩位當代傳奇大師的交會時刻,這場在柏林的音樂會舉行於2006年12月,曲目為舒曼的第二號小提琴奏鳴曲與「兒時情景」,以及巴爾托克的第一號小提奏鳴曲與無伴奏小提琴奏鳴曲。另外有兩首安可曲,分別是克萊斯勒的「愛之悲」與「美麗的羅絲瑪蓮」。慕尼黑的報紙這麼寫著:「兩位音樂巨人的歷史性一刻;他們是室內樂的夢幻搭檔,而他們彼此之間的音樂交流,其他二重奏組合難以比擬。」
在同時期所拍攝的電影之中,克萊曼對他的夢幻搭檔阿格麗希這麼說:「弔詭之處正在於,即使我們沒有在愛戀之中,我們彼此經由音樂交流的親蜜語言,就像普通一對愛戀之人一般;甚至有這種可能,那就是在演奏的當下,我們比任何一對愛侶更像是情人。」此外,舒曼與巴爾托克的作品很難出現在同一場演奏會之中,舒曼代表了德國浪漫傳統充盈的一面;而巴爾托克的音樂更像是從這麼完美的世界脫離出來,他的音樂「精細而稀疏、複雜而難懂」,但這兩個作曲家也有共通之處:他們都是鋼琴家出身,鋼琴創作一直是他們兩人創作的本質,而以此野心十足地延伸至其他類型的作品去,而且他們兩人都抱持著高度的興趣看待音樂訓練,並且將音樂演出提高到一個更寛廣的文化視野。而身為演出者的阿格麗希與克萊曼,也更能從他們的作品裡展現更大更自由的表達空間。

格林德波恩歌劇音樂節一開始沒有穩定的型式,由一位喜愛音樂的克利斯提(John Christie)所發起,最初只在幾個晚上演出歌劇而已,這些音樂會一開始都是在一間管風琴廳演出的,其名字來源是因為這個房間裡的管風琴,是英國天主教堂以外最大型的。這時的格林德波恩不像國際都市倫敦,只是一個鄉村性質的小城鎮,但由於克利斯提將這項節慶辦得卓然有成,在1920年正式設立組織之後,格林德波恩歌劇音樂節即穩定舉辦,這裡也沒有外觀雄偉的音樂廳,所有演出場所都是1870年改建而成,以它們的嵌板與音色效果而言,很可能是早在16世紀即完成的建築。克利斯提在某個晚間音樂會遇到Audrey Mildmay,兩人不僅相戀結婚,而她後來也成為這個音樂節朝向專業行進的關鍵人物。
想當然爾,兩人的蜜月旅行必定在音樂大城,克利斯提參與了薩爾茲堡與拜魯特樂節,這讓他有了想法,就是將專業的歌劇演出搬到格林德波恩(克利斯提原先的概念就是『南方城鎮的華格納Wagner on the South Downs』,但此舉要等到他的曾孫古斯,2003年將『崔斯坦與依索德』搬到這裡歌劇音樂節裡才告完成。)不過,他們所在的歌劇廳,是一個容納得了交響樂團與300個座位的空間,這比較適合演出規模沒那麼大的、較為親密的歌劇種類,而不適合華格納。在二戰期間,克利斯提挑選三位因為納粹德國而流亡的藝術人士擔任要職:布許(Fritz Busch)擔任音樂指揮、艾伯特(Carl Ebert)擔任藝術總監、賓(Rudolf Bing)擔任歌劇院的首席經理。
第一屆的音樂節於1934年5月28日開幕,曲子是莫札特的「費加洛婚禮」,同年也演出了「女人皆如此」。1936年演出經典的「唐喬萬尼」時有433位樂迷觀賞;1952年到了600人,而1977年已經有850個觀眾了。格林德波恩歌劇音樂節的演出曾經在二戰期間被中斷,因為該歌劇院成為倫敦孩童撤離的避難所。而且歌劇院經營在二戰期間確實很難維持,克利斯提花了一些時間才解除歌劇院面對的財政困難,1962年他去世了,由兒子喬治接手繼續經營,他進一步改善財務體質,使得音樂節能夠持續下去。
到了1980年代,由於興建了一個全新的歌劇院,格林德波恩歌劇音樂節明確地獲得了它應得的祟高地位,而舊的歌劇院則在1992年關門。有許多回憶在那間已關閉的舊劇院發生,很幸運地,包括一大批歌劇錄音都在那裡誕生,它們的精華就在這套CD內,三齣羅西尼的歌劇,還有一系列的莫札特歌劇;當然,還有那部足以名留青史的蓋西文歌劇「波吉與貝絲」錄音。新的歌劇院歷時兩年,花費三千四百萬英磅建造而成(其中90%都來自捐贈),它有1200個座位,也有公認高水準的聲響效果,1994年5月28日在新歌劇院上演的第一齣歌劇,正是在60年前音樂節開幕時所上演的首齣歌劇──莫札特的「費加洛婚禮」。
格林德波恩歌劇音樂節在每年的五月下旬開始,直到當年的八月,大概就是英國的夏季(這也成為它吸引許多樂迷前往英國的重要因素),而在現在它正渡過其75年的紀念,這也正是這套合輯發行的原因。

長久以來,已經很少看到主題如此特別(非XXX大全集),而收藏量又如此豐富的大廠錄音了。這套「斯堪地納維亞之聲」(The Sound of Scandinavia)共六張CD,收錄許多北歐作曲家(其中有一些在國際上的確是名不見經傳)的重要作品集,除了我們熟知的葛利格、西貝流士,還有並沒有那麼熟悉的尼爾森之外,還有Armas Järnefelt、Johan Svendsen、Ture Rangström、Wilhelm Stenhammar、Lars-Erik Larsson、Dag Wirén、Hans Christian Lumbye、Franz Berwald等人的作品集,樂團與指揮也幾乎是北歐出身的重要音樂人物或團體,雖然國際知名的人物只有鋼琴家安斯涅。「斯堪地納維亞之聲」讓我們對北歐的作曲環境與傳統有更深入的認識。

在2009年4月6日,音樂界慶祝普列文這位多才多藝音樂家渡過他的80大壽。出生於柏林,普列文很早就開始鋼琴訓練,而在1938年,普列文為了躲避納粹而與全家人一同搬到巴黎,之後再搬到落杉磯,他在1943年成為美國公民。普列文的老師即為著名的作曲家Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco,1946年當他17歲的時候,他開始為MGM做電影配樂的工作,同時他也以爵士鋼琴家出道,即使他後來成為古典界的重要人物,他的這項才華使終沒有被忽視過;當普列文在18歲,還在高中上學的時候,他就已經有為Sunset Records錄音的工作,之後他首度在RCA Victor發行唱片。
普列文在在五零年代不僅做過改編者,也做過作曲家、指揮家等,作品包括有「Three Little Words」、「Kiss me, Kate」、「Silk Stockings」,1958年普列文得到他生平的第一座奧斯卡獎,而他更被提名超過13次之多!直到1970年,普列文都一直鑽研在電影配樂的領域,成為這方面的名家。1962年普列文開始從好萊塢拓展至外界,開始成為一個全職的嚴肅古典音樂指揮,1968年他獲得了倫敦交響樂團的首席指揮一職。1971年普列文開始與西塔琴大師香卡在EMI Classics錄音:曲子是香卡的第一號西塔琴協奏曲,以及蓋西文的「藍色狂想曲」、鋼琴協奏曲、「一個美國人在巴黎」等錄音。其中普列文的蓋西文錄音立刻成為暢銷品,其經典地位也被GROC系列拿來重發。
在接下來這幾年,普列文在EMI Classics頗富盛名的柴可夫斯基三大芭蕾舞曲「天鵝湖」、「睡美人」、「胡桃鉗」,還有普羅高菲夫令人難忘的「羅密歐與茱麗葉」與「灰姑娘」這些芭蕾舞曲,以致於主要的古典合唱作品集,像是華爾頓的「伯沙撒的盛宴」與拉赫曼尼諾夫的「鐘」,而「鐘」還為他獲得了葛萊美獎。普列文也是一位出色的伴奏者,與帕爾曼一起合作許多優異的唱片;至於交響曲的部分,普列文指揮拉赫曼尼諾夫的交響曲,尤其是第二號,得到了極高的評價,也為他得到不少的古典獎項,同時他在蕭士塔高維契與梅湘的交響作品上都有不錯的成績。同時普列文也演出像布列頓或美國其他作曲家的優異作品,例如霍爾斯特的「行星組曲」,還有EMI數位錄音的里程碑──由他所指揮的德布西「映象」與「牧神的午後前奏曲」。他在擔任倫敦交響樂團時,成功地將古典音樂融入大街小巷,也到電視廣播上演出,使得他們的曝光率大增,他直到1979年才從這個位置上退下來。
普列文在匹茲堡交響樂團擔任音樂總監(1976-1984年),他在那裡有另外一系列的電視節目;此外他也擔任皇家愛樂管弦樂團的音樂總監、洛杉磯愛樂的首席指揮等職,同時他也開始從事作曲的工作,先在1977年寫下他的第一齣歌劇「每個好男孩都該得到恩寵」,之後在1998年創作的歌劇「慾望街車」則由舊金山歌劇院首演。1996年普列文獲頒大英帝國的榮譽爵士勳章(Honorary Knighthood);1998年他獲得甘迺迪中心的榮譽;2005年他獲得國際顧爾德獎,2008年獲得留聲機雜誌的終生成就獎。

2009年是作曲家韓德爾逝世250週年,各家唱片公司無不卯足了勁,將錄音史上重要的韓德爾作品重新整理上市,而在獲得指揮家柯帝斯的首肯之後,Virgin Classics在柯帝斯指揮1992年創立的巴洛克情結古樂團之下,集結韓德爾六齣歌劇「羅德里哥」、「拉達密斯托」、「阿德密托」、「費南多」、「阿米諾」、「戴達米亞」、總共16張CD的大套裝盒集終於上市,給喜歡巴洛克歌劇的人一項相當超值的禮物。
我們都知道韓德爾1711年定居英國,1727年歸化為英國公民之後,總計在英國居住49年,將倫敦打造成為最有音樂氣息的都市之一,雖然他最受歡迎的就是由於喬治一世國王的因素而於1717年所譜寫的「水上音樂」,然而巴洛克歌劇才是最能領教韓德爾作曲長才的重點。
指揮柯帝斯畢業於柏克萊大學,他是最早研究巴洛克大鍵琴演奏的現代演奏家之一,之後他將音樂研究的重點放在歌劇,尤其是罕的巴洛克歌劇上,並在這方面獲得極高的聲望和權威性,目前也是最受崇敬的韓德爾歌劇指揮。柯帝所所做的研究,目前也為各個古樂指揮與樂團所採用。除了韓德爾的重要歌劇如「凱撒大帝」之外,柯帝斯也專注於佚失已久的巴洛克歌劇身上,包括韋瓦第「朱斯提諾」、韓德爾「阿德密托」、「芙洛諦丹特」、「戴達米亞」等歌劇都在近代獲得首度演出,而這也是柯帝斯不凡的音樂成就。
