activism in New York
發現這個月在紐約有兩場頗大型的activism研討會。在紐約常有這種活動,而且通常參加是要收錢。在台灣好像比較少這種活動。
NYC Grassroots Media Conference
Conference Goals:
The fight for media democracy will not be won by academics, or lobbyists, or people representing one race, class or gender working separately. In order to realize real change in the control and access to media, grassroots leadership is needed from diverse constituencies who understand that access and fair representation in the media is essential for realizing victories in social justice.
Since 2004 the Grassroots Media Conferences have convened thousands for a weekend of workshops, skills-sharing, dialogue, debate and strategizing sessions about media making, media policy and how to use media to forward social justice campaigns.
The 2005 NYC Grassroots Media Conference is sponsored by New School University Graduate Program in Media Studies, and supported by a grant from Citizens for NYC.

TURNING THE TIDE TOWARDS FREEDOM:
Building the Youth and Student Movement for JusticeFebruary 17-19, 2006
New York City
The Young Democratic Socialists (YDS) are hosting a national conference in New York City on February 17-19 called "Turning the Tide Towards Freedom: Building the Youth and Student Movement for Justice" to bring together activists from across the country for workshops, trainings, great speakers, and more to reenergize the struggle to build a better future!
POLITICAL CONTEXT
Hurricane Katrina exposed the realities of injustice in America, and a movement is growing to challenge not only the Bush administration, but the entire systems of inequality and oppression that led to the disaster. The US government's use of torture, secret detentions and illegal spying has fanned the flames of already growing popular discontent with the war. The recent appointment of the reactionary judge Alito to the Supreme Court has further galvanized activists to focus energy on the upcoming mid-term elections. Right wing attempts to slash billions from vital programs like student aid and food stamps are starting to provoke a backlash from communities that refuse to take it anymore.
In this context, it is time to renew our energies, build community, and remember to keep our eyes on the prize: a world of genuine democracy, liberty, and equality. Join us in NYC from February 17-19 to debate, learn from each other and strengthen the youth and student movement. Young people can and must turn the tide towards freedom, for in the timeless words of Frederick Douglass, "power concedes nothing without a demand!"
