Death Toll in China Quake Climbs
Search-and-rescue operations are underway in China’s Sichuan province following a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Monday afternoon. It was one of the worst quakes to hit China in 30 years, with a death toll that has reached 9,000 and is expected to continue climbing throughout the recovery effort. One of the most horrific tragedies of the disaster, a school collapse near the quake’s epicenter, claimed the lives of hundreds of students. The temblor was the result of an ongoing collision between India and Asia. India was once an island, but approximately 50 million years ago, it collided with the underside of Asia. The tectonic stresses caused by India’s continued movement generate scores of earthquakes each year.(資料來源)
