隨著取名自其巡迴演出音響工程師名字的七曲現場演出唱片The John Byrd EP在這3月面世,美國西雅圖Indie-Pop樂隊Death Cab For Cutie也隨即脫離他們的「獨立樂團」生涯,邁向主流之列──即使DCFC跟一手提拔他們之當地獨立廠牌Barsuk Records的賓主關係尚未結束,但同時樂隊與主流公司Atlantic Records的合作也隨之展開。
其實DCFC打造出的Indie-Pop音樂一向都屬於中間路線,歌曲具有美好的Hook、主腦Ben Gibbard筆下的歌詞又可令二十來歲的年輕朋友聽得共鳴,加上2003年前作專輯Transatlanticism達超過五十萬銷量,還被應邀聯同 Bruce Springsteen、R.E.M.、Pearl Jam等等搖滾巨星參與Vote For Change巡迴演出。這支西雅圖樂團注定是非池中物。
多才多藝
今天Death Cab For Cutie得以吐氣揚眉、出人頭地,然而在1997年於華盛頓州小鎮柏爾罕(Bellingham)成立的他們,起初還不過是Ben Gibbard這位工程師學生與拍檔Chris Walla的業餘樂隊,因為同年在蚊型獨立廠牌Elsinor Records出版的卡式帶專輯You Can Play These Songs’ Chord在Indie圈取得不俗的迴響,從而亦促使Ben讓DCFC以全職樂隊姿態發展。翌年由Barsuk Records(其實他們起初也是一所只有一個郵政信箱的獨立公司)出版的Something About Airplanes,才算是樂隊的首張官方專輯。
經過We Have The Facts And We’re Voting Yes(2000年)和The Photo Album(2001年),DCFC的知名度也日益增長。毋庸置疑,為他們帶來高度評價、叫好又叫座的03年專輯Transatlanticism,對樂隊而言便更具奠定性意義(相對於R.E.M.的Document般)。連一向「坐唔暖」的鼓手位置,也自此穩定下來。
DCFC是一支Indie-Pop樂隊,但他們的音樂平台又並非如此簡單。作為DCFC主將之餘,Ben又跟電音製作人Jimmy Tamborello(又名DNTEL,亦是Electro-Pop組合Figurine成員)組成Indietronica樂團The Postal Service,其大受好評的03年專輯Give Up更達六十五萬銷量。而Chris亦是Indie圈中薄有名氣的唱片監製,曾為The Decemberists、The Thermals、Nada Surf、Travis Morrison製作唱片。那難免二人能予樂迷多才多藝的印象。
一首有如雨後陽光般美妙的Marching Bands Of Manhattan,來為這張成熟而美麗的專輯揭開序幕。先行單曲Soul Meets Body有如昔日R.E.M.的Jangle-Pop作品般清爽怡人,Ben搶耳地”Ba-ba-ba”的唱著時確是神來之筆。在Plans裡無疑更彰顯他們的作曲才華,像Someday You Will Be Loved的調子便可媲美六十年代的Classic-Pop曲目。
陰暗面
鋼琴Ballad作品Different Names For The Same Thing是Ben道出在外國旅遊時因語言的迥異而產生的疏離感,是他們的Lost In Translation經驗嗎?
今天Ben等人平均已廿九歲了,他們的歌曲也不獨是說出二十出頭年輕人的心聲,像Acoustic-Folk歌曲I Will Follow You Into The Dark便帶著陣陣幽悒情感而來,甚至Ben更屢次涉及死亡的命題。聽聽一曲What Sarah Said,所說是即使是彼此相愛至海枯石爛的一對,最終其中一方也要看著對方逝世,歌詞所描寫出是當另一半彌留時,你在醫院守候的忐忑不安心情,傷感悲情。一句“Love is watching someone die”已一言蔽之。
倘若Transatlantic是相對於R.E.M.脫離獨立公司前的Document專輯,那麼Plans便是Death Cab For Cutie的Green了。
